Heels’ NET ranking falls to season-low as NCAA résumé takes hit

By R.L. Bynum

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The good NCAA tournament résumé that North Carolina built up during nonconference play is rapidly falling apart.

After the No. 14 Tar Heels fell to 3–3 in Quad 1 games with their 95–90 loss Wednesday night at Stanford, they fell eight spots in the NET rankings to a season-low 30. That’s the lowest since UNC was 32 at the end of last season, when it barely slipped into the tournament field.

The average NET ranking of teams defeating the Tar Heels dropped from 19 to 37 after Wednesday’s loss.

UNC (14–3, 2–2 ACC) still has a chance to leave Northern California with a Quad 1 victory if the Heels can rebound at 4 p.m. Saturday with a victory at Cal (13–5, 1–4; NET ranking of 69).

Getting a win in Berkeley would be huge for UNC since the only other Quad 1 chance in January will be on Jan. 24 with a visit to No. 16 Virginia (15–2, 4–0; NET ranking of 14).

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC is 3–3; 9 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 10; 3 games left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 4–0; 2 games left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 6–0; no games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

Carolina has nine more games currently classified as Quad 1.

The consensus of 68 bracket projections made before the loss to Stanford that are listed on Bracket Matrix projected UNC to be the lowest of the No. 4 seeds, with ESPN listing the Tar Heels as a No. 5 seed.

The chances of being sent to Greenville, S.C., for first- and second-round games are becoming remote and even getting a double-bye in the ACC tournament will no longer be easy.
