UNC jumps to season-high ranking in AP Top 25 men’s poll

By R.L. Bynum

Carolina moved up to a season-high No. 11 in the AP Top 25 men’s poll after the Tar Heels’ big 71–68 home victory Saturday over Duke.

The best previous rank this season for UNC (19–4, 7–3 ACC), which also beat Syracuse at home last Monday 87–77, was No. 12 on Dec. 15 and Dec. 22.

It’s the Tar Heels’ best ranking since they were No. 10 on Nov. 18, 2024. The 863 poll points are the most since garnering 976 on Nov. 25, 2024, when UNC was No. 12.

Duke (21–2), now tied for the ACC lead with Clemson at 10–1, stayed at No. 4. The Tigers (20–4) remained at No. 20 after winning at Stanford 66–64 and at California 77–55.

Virginia moved up three spots to No. 15 after beating Pittsburgh 67–47 and Syracuse 72–59, and Louisville stayed at No. 24 after a 76–65 win over Notre Dame and an 88–80 victory over Wake Forest).

— Illinois (20–5) fell from No. 5 to No. 8 after an 85–82 overtime loss to Michigan State.
— Gonzaga (23–2) dropped from No. 6 to No. 12 after an 87–80 loss to unranked Portland.
— Michigan State (20–4) remained No. 10 after losing to Cade Tyson’s unranked Minnesota team 76–73, but topping Illinois 85–82 in overtime.
— Texas Tech (17–6) dropped three spots to No. 16 after losing to Kansas 64–61.

Elliott Cadeau’s Michigan team (22–1) held at No. 2 after beating Penn State 110–69 and Ohio State 82–61.

Vanderbilt (19–4), with Tyler Nickel and Jalen Washington, slipped four spots to No. 19 after a 92–91 home loss to unranked Oklahoma.
