North Carolina and N.C. State nearly swapped NET rankings after the Wolfpack’s 82–58 pounding of the Tar Heels on Tuesday night.
The short-handed No. 16 Tar Heels (20–6, 8–5) fell from 25 to 28 in the NET while the Wolfpack (19–9, 10–4) moved from 29 to 25, equaling their season-high and moving to 4–6 in Quad 1 games.
UNC, 5–6 in Quad 1 games, which also fell in KenPom (28 to 34) and Torvick (25 to 32), would be a No. 7 seed based on the NET ranking. But that is only one element that the NCAA tournament committee considers when determining who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.
Assuming that Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar return before Selection Sunday, the committee would likely take into account any losses, such as Tuesday’s at N.C. State, that came without them.
It’s unlikely that the Tar Heels will become a bubble team like last season when they were 1–12 in Quad 1 games.
NCAA quadrant system
Quadrant 1 (UNC is 6–8): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 5–0): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 8–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

Even though Syracuse (15–12, 6–8) is tied for 11th in the ACC, Carolina’s 1 p.m. Saturday road game (ABC) against the Orange (NET ranking of 72) is the first of three remaining Quad 1 regular-season games for UNC.
It’s a quick turnaround after that for another Quad 1 game with No. 21 Louisville (19–7, 8–5; NET ranking of 15) visiting the Smith Center at 7 p.m. Monday (ESPN).
UNC closes the regular season with two Quad 2 home games — Saturday, Feb. 28, against Virginia Tech (17–10, 6–8; NET ranking of 56) and Tuesday, March 3, against Clemson (20–7, 10–4) — and the Saturday, March 7 visit to No. 3 Duke (24–2, 13–1; 2).
The Clemson game could become Quad 1 if the Tigers improve their NET ranking to 30. Wednesday’s 85–77 loss at Wake Forest made that less likely as that dropped its NET ranking to 33. Next, the Tigers, who have lost three consecutive games, face Florida State and Louisville before coming to the Smith Center.
According to the consensus of 124 projections made before Tuesday’s game and listed on Bracket Matrix, the Tar Heels are the second-highest No. 6 seed.
In ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s Tuesday bracket, UNC is a No. 6 seed in the East Regional (Washington), playing first- and second-round games in Tampa, Fla.
The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode’s Tuesday projection also has Carolina as a No. 6 seed in the East Regional but playing first- and second-round games in San Diego. Both projections have Duke as the No. 1 seed in the East.
Patrick Stevens’ projection, posted on oviesandgiglio.com, has UNC as a No. 6 seed in the West Regional (San Jose, Calif.) with first- and second-round games in Greenville. S.C.
Made for March has UNC as a lowest No. 5 seed and playing in Greenville, explaining its rationale in this tweet.
