UNC earns double-bye, No. 4 seed, draws 9:30 quarterfinal start time

By R.L. Bynum

No. 17 North Carolina is locked into the No. 4 seed in the ACC men’s tournament in Charlotte, but that won’t to come with a traditional afternoon start time in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The Tar Heels (24–6, 12–5 ACC), which beat Clemson 67–63 on Tuesday, clinched the double-bye when Miami (24–6, 13–4) won at SMU 77–69 on Wednesday night, securing the No. 3 seed for the Hurricanes and the No. 4 seed for Carolina.

UNC and No. 1-ranked Duke (28–2, 16–1), the No. 1 seed, would meet in Friday’s semifinals for the second consecutive season if they both win in the quarterfinals.

For many years, the No. 4 seed played in the second game of a Thursday afternoon doubleheader at 2:30 with the No. 1 seed playing in the noon game. This season, however, that will change. Duke’s game will start at 7 o’clock and UNC’s game at 9:30.

That means that No. 13-ranked and No. 2-seed Virginia (26–4, 14–3) would play at noon Thursday, and No. 3-seed Miami would play at 2:30.

If the favorites win other games Saturday (Notre Dame, Clemson, SMU, Louisville, N.C. State, Syracuse, Virginia and California), Clemson (21–9, 11–6) would be the No. 5 seed, and Carolina would play the winner of Wednesday’s second-round game between the Tigers and the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game between No. 12 Virginia Tech (19–11, 8–9) and No. 13 Syracuse (15–15, 6–11). The Tar Heels have wins over all three, including two over the Orange.

The last four times UNC and Duke met in the ACC tournament have been semifinal matchups:
— 2025 in Charlotte: Duke 74, North Carolina 71
— 2019 in Charlotte: Duke 74, North Carolina 73
— 2018 in Brooklyn: North Carolina 74, Duke 69
— 2017 in Brooklyn: Duke 93, North Carolina 83

Duke went on to win the title after its three victories, but the Tar Heels lost to Virginia 71–63 in the 2018 championship game.

UNC and Duke haven’t met in an ACC tournament championship game since Duke won 75–58 in Greensboro in 2011.

Carolina hasn’t played Duke and won the title in the same ACC tournament since beating the Blue Devils 83–68 in the 1998 championship game in Greensboro. UNC didn’t face Duke on its way to ACC tournament titles in 2007 in Tampa, in 2008 in Charlotte or in 2016 in Washington.
