UNC jumps seven spots to season-high rank in D1 Baseball poll

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina jumped seven spots in the D1 Baseball Top 25 to a season-high No. 6 after going 4–0 last week.

The Tar Heels (24–4, 9–3 ACC) rolled to a 9–1 victory Tuesday in Charlotte over South Carolina, then swept a three-game series at Notre Dame 6–5, 13–7 and 15–10 for their fifth consecutive victory.

It’s UNC’s highest rank since it was No. 5 on Feb. 24 last season. The Tar Heels’ highest previous rank this season was No. 7 on Feb. 23 and March 2.

It’s the second time since the ACC went to the three-game series format in 1990 that UNC has swept its first two league road series, after winning a series at Cal on March 13–15. It also happened in 2013 when Carolina won 59 games and advanced to the College World Series. It’s the first time the Tar Heels have swept two road ACC series in the same season since 2017.

UNC is tied for second place in the league with No. 3 Georgia Tech (22–5, 9–3). No. 7 Florida State (17–1, 8–1) atop the league.

Other ACC teams in the poll are No. 10 Virginia (22–7, 7–5), down one spot, and No. 22 Boston College (20–9, 8–4), which wasn’t previously ranked. N.C. State (18–10, 3–6), which was No. 14, dropped out of the poll after an 0–4 week.

The Tar Heels return home at 8 p.m. Tuesday (ACC Network) to face Campbell (18–9), which has won its last nine games after winning 7–2 at N.C. State last Tuesday. The Camels swept a weekend home series against Charleston. Carolina hosts a three-game ACC series starting at 6 p.m. Thursday against Boston College.
