UNC rises to season-high in D1 Baseball Top 25 after big series win

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina rose to a season-high No. 2 in the D1 Baseball Top 25 after taking two of three games over the weekend against Georgia Tech in a marquee weekend series at Boshamer Stadium.

The Tar Heels (33–7–1, 15–6 ACC), who have won five consecutive ACC series, earned their highest rank since being No. 1 on May 27 last season, when they moved up two slots from the previous week. UNC is also No. 2 in the Baseball America Top 25 and in the Perfect Game Top 25.

UNC, which was No. 3 last week, finishes a five-game homestand at 6 p.m. Tuesday (ACC Network Extra) against High Point (26–13) before beginning a three-game series at Duke (22–20, 8–13) at 7 p.m. Thursday (ACC Network).

Georgia Tech (32–7, 16–5), which has a one-game lead over UNC in the ACC standings after losing its first league series of the season, fell one spot to No. 3. The Yellow Jackets had been No. 3 for four consecutive weeks before ascending to No. 2 last week.

UCLA (36–3, 21–0 Big Ten) remained No. 1 for the eighth consecutive week after rebounding from a 4–0 loss Tuesday to unranked UC Santa Barbara to sweep Minnesota in a weekend Big Ten series.

Other ACC teams in the poll are:

— No. 8 Florida State (28–11, 12–6), which was 4–0 last week and swept Notre Dame, with its ranking unchanged.
— No. 10 Virginia (28–13, 12–9), which lost to VCU but took two of three against Clemson and fell one spot.
— No. 22 Boston College (31–12, 14–7), which went 4–0, beating Northeastern and sweeping Duke at home and moved up two spots.

Coastal Carolina (28–11), which visits UNC on April 28, fell two spots to No. 9. The Chanticleers lost 10–5 to Wake Forest last week before sweeping Georgia State over the weekend.

Carolina is 5–4 against teams in this week’s Top 25, losing two of three to Virginia, and winning two of three against Boston College and Georgia Tech.

UNC is No. 7 in the RPI, with Georgia Tech No. 3.
