Who is Bryan Tibaldi, the latest addition to Michael Malone’s UNC coaching staff?

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina will add Bryan Tibaldi as an assistant coach on Michael Malone’s first Tar Heels staff, according to multiple reports, bringing to Chapel Hill a longtime video and player-development specialist whose résumé spans the NBA, the G League and multiple Division I programs.

Tibaldi was an assistant coach last season at Providence, following a six-year run in the Cleveland Cavaliers organization that included a promotion to NBA assistant coach in September 2024.

At Providence, then-head coach Kim English said that Tibaldi was a coach shaped by both high-level teaching and the behind-the-scenes work that often drives development.

“Bryan is a brilliant and dedicated basketball coach,” said English, who Providence fired after the season and appeared to be joining the UNC staff before changing his mind.

English pointed to Tibaldi’s grounding under Tom Izzo at Michigan State, his early pro start with the Chicago Bulls, and the years he spent in Cleveland.

“It is a tremendous opportunity for our team and players to be coached by people who have extensive experience, not only with successful college programs, but who have intimately witnessed success in the NBA,” English said when he hired Tibaldi.

A Traverse City, Mich., native, he played two seasons at Michigan State as a walk-on. He later worked as a graduate assistant on Izzo’s staff from 2007 to 2009 when the Spartans went 58–16, won a Big Ten title and advanced to an NCAA championship game.

His first NBA stop came with the Chicago Bulls, where he worked with the coaching staff as an assistant video coordinator before moving into basketball operations, a role that included evaluating prospects and coordinating pre-draft workouts.

From there, Tibaldi moved back into the college game at Missouri, first as video coordinator and later as director of basketball operations, handling the kind of video, practice and logistics workload that has become a launching pad for many assistants.

When Missouri head coach Kim Anderson retained Tibaldi in 2014, he praised his ability.

“Bryan is a talented young coach and has great passion for Mizzou basketball and the coaching profession,” Anderson said. “His work ethic and attention to detail will serve this staff and our student-athletes well.”

After Missouri, Tibaldi took on director of basketball operations duties at DePaul. The next move, to Cleveland State in 2017, shifted him more fully into an on-court coaching role.

From Cleveland State, Tibaldi moved back into the professional pipeline, joining the Cavaliers’ organization for the 2019–20 season with the franchise’s G League affiliate (then the Canton Charge) before earning a player development and video assistant role with the NBA club and, eventually, an assistant coach title.

He takes all of that experience to Malone’s staff, blending NBA teaching with college recruiting and player development.
