UNC begins play Friday, seeking consecutive ACC tournament titles for first time in 42 years

By R.L. Bynum

Ten games will have already been played at the ACC tournament before No. 2-ranked North Carolina plays its first game at Charlotte’s Truist Field.

The No. 2-seed Tar Heels will play in a 3 p.m. Friday quarterfinal game against the winner of the 5 p.m. Wednesday second-round game. That game will match No. 7 Virginia Tech (31–25) against the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game between No. 15 Clemson (29–23) and No. 10 seed Notre Dame.

UNC didn’t play Virginia Tech, won two of three at Clemson and swept a series at Notre Dame.

If Carolina wins Friday, it will play in the second Saturday semifinal game at 5 p.m. The championship game is at noon Sunday. The final will air on ESPN2, with all of the other games on ACC Network.

This is the second season of the single-elimination format, which includes every ACC baseball team and features four first- round games Tuesday and four first-round games Wednesday. There are two quarterfinals on Thursday and two more on Friday.

Coach Scott Forbes’ team also played on Friday last season, when the event was held at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Tar Heels won three consecutive games, beating Clemson 14–4 in the final to claim the championship.

Carolina hasn’t won consecutive ACC tournament titles in 42 years. It last happened when they won the titles in 1982 and 1983 at Boshamer Stadium, then made it three in a row in 1984 at Durham Athletic Park.

The tournament begins with four games on Tuesday, starting at 9 a.m. with No. 9 seed N.C. State (32–21) taking on No. 16 seed Duke (25–30). At 1 p.m., No. 12 Stanford (27–24) battles No. 13 California (28–25), followed by Notre Dame against Clemson at 5 p.m. and No. 11 Louisville (30–26) meetings No. 14 Pitt (30–23, 11-19) at 9 p.m.

Wednesday’s play starts at 9 a.m., with No. 8 seed Virginia (35–20) facing the State-Duke winner. No. 5 seed Miami (36–17) then plays the Stanford-Cal winner at 1 p.m. No. 7 seed Virginia Tech matches up with the Notre Dame-Clemson winner at 5 p.m., with No. 6 seed Wake Forest (38–18) battling the Louisville-Pitt winner at 9 p.m.

Thursday’s quarterfinals feature top-seeded Georgia Tech (45–9) playing the 3 p.m. Wednesday winner at 3 p.m., and No. 4 seed Boston College (36–20) facing the 1 p.m. Wednesday winner at 7 p.m. ET. After UNC’s game on Friday, No. 3 seed Florida State (38–16) plays the 9 p.m. Wednesday winner.
