Able to pull name from NBA draft process, play sophomore season at UNC

By R.L. Bynum

Matt Able will withdraw from the NBA draft process and continue his college career at North Carolina, according to multiple reports.

This comes after he lamented during the NBA Draft Combine that he was “back and forth” about whether to withdraw his name or continue his college career. He has until 11:59 on Wednesday night to pull his name.

Able, who played his freshman season at N.C. State and committed to Carolina on April 21, had two strong scrimmages during the combine, scoring 17 points in 22 minutes after collecting 15 points in 19 minutes in the other.

When Able entered the draft process, he said that he would keep the option of playing at Carolina open as he gathered feedback from NBA teams. He had until May 27 to withdraw and maintain his college eligibility.

Able is the fourth N.C. State player to transfer to UNC and the first since World War II, joining Bernie Mock, Fred Swartzberg and Bones McKinney. Able’s transfer comes one offseason after Ven-Allen Lubin transferred from Carolina to N.C. State.

The 6–6 sharpshooter showed early flashes during his freshman season with the Wolfpack. He came off the bench in all 34 games, averaging 8.8 points and 3.4 rebounds while providing ball pressure and length on the perimeter. He shot 41.6% from the floor and 35.5% from 3-point range.

His role expanded in January when his scoring spiked, and his shooting steadied. In a two-game run against Miami and UNC, he totaled 36 points and eight 3-pointers. He scored a season-high 19 points in the Pack’s victory over Carolina and tied his season-high with five 3-pointers.

Roster assuming all players with eligibility other than Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar and the seven players who entered the transfer portal return, which would put UNC two under the 15-player limit. The class for next season is listed.
