Cal State Northridge right-hander James Voorhies has given North Carolina another intriguing arm out of the transfer portal.
The 6–4, 197-pound rising sophomore announced his commitment with a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
He became one of the more intriguing young arms out of the Cal State Northridge bullpen this season. In 17 appearances, including two starts, he went 4–3 with a 3.16 ERA, allowing only 27 hits and 14 walks while striking out 46 in 42⅔ innings.
He also recorded five saves, underscoring how Cal State Northridge trusted him in high-leverage spots.
His best outing by length came March 22 against Cal State Fullerton, when he allowed just one run on four hits over five innings in one of his two starts. In his college debut, he recorded seven strikeouts in three scoreless innings against Seattle on Feb. 14.
Perfect Game’s college scouting coverage pegged Voorhies’ fastball at 90–92 mph, and he has a changeup of 83–85 mph.
Voorhies looks like the kind of pitcher who gives UNC options. He was used mostly as a reliever at Northridge, but the two starts, the five-inning outing against Fullerton and his size suggest there is starter upside to explore, while his freshman usage also shows he already knows how to handle bullpen leverage.
At College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, Calif., he went 6–1 with a 1.09 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 83⅔ innings and played quarterback on the football team.
