Atlanta Dream waive, then re-sign Nivar

By R.L. Bynum

A day after the Atlanta Dream waived rookie guard Indya Nivar, the team signed her to a developmental contract to bring her back on their roster.

The former UNC star, a second‑round pick (No. 28 overall) in the 2026 WNBA Draft, has appeared in 19 regular‑season games for Atlanta, averaging 3.2 minutes and just under a point and a rebound while bringing her patented tough defense off the bench.

Atlanta waived her on Tuesday when it signed veteran guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough. But the Dream re-signed Nivar on Wednesday, the same day they waived forward Amy Okonkwo.

That limited playing time has included two appearances with double-digit minutes, with a season‑high 11 minutes in a 77–66 loss at Golden State. She scored a season-high four points in four minutes of the 86–66 win at Portland on May 29.

Nivar, who produced the second triple-double in UNC program history last season, is shooting 38.9% from the floor, has made 2 of 3 3-point attempts and both free-throw attempts, with seven assists, five steals and two blocks

For Nivar, a developmental contract likely means most of her work will come in practice and in team drills, with the possibility of a quick promotion if injuries or further roster moves create an opening.

Atlanta entered the season with a deep backcourt and veteran additions intended to contend, which compressed minutes for rookies and fringe rotation players. Leading the backcourt are Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray and Jodin Canada, with Isobel Borlase and Te-Hina Paopao coming off the bench.

The Dream, who acquired Angel Reese in the offseason, are sixth in the WNBA at 12–9 entering Wednesday’s home game against the Seattle Storm at 8 p.m. (Prime Video).
