RJ Davis has best game of summer ahead of Wilson’s battle Monday with Peterson

By R.L. Bynum

Tar Heels posted mixed results over the weekend in Las Vegas at the NBA Summer League following Caleb Wilson’s sensational debut on Friday.

After a quiet outing Saturday for San Antonio, RJ Davis rebounded with his best game of the summer in a battle against Cormac Ryan and Pete Nance as the Spurs earned a 90–80 victory on Sunday over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Davis, averaging 12.0 points through six games, came off the bench in the Spurs’ 70–49 Saturday win over the New York Knicks and fell short of double-digit points for only the second time this summer with five points on 2-of-9 shooting. He rebounded in a big way Sunday, pouring in 20 points in nearly 29 minutes in San Antonio’s win, adding three assists and finishing with a team-high +22.

Ryan came off the bench to score a summer-high 15 points and three 3-pointers (the below tweet incorrectly says four), with five rebounds and a summer-high four steals. Nance contributed eight points, five rebounds and five assists.

Seth Trimble was the only other Tar Heel to play Sunday, coming off the bench to collect eight points, five rebounds and two steals in his Washington Wizards’ 104–85 victory over Sacramento.

Henri Veesaar and Drake Powell had quiet games in the Atlanta Hawks’ 83–76 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.

Veesaar didn’t start and finished with six points and two blocks in nearly 17 minutes, while Powell’s shooting struggles continued. Powell missed all four field-goal attempts, including two from 3-point range, and is 1-of-38 from the floor and 0-of-17 on 3-point attempts through five games.

Wilson plays again Monday at 9 p.m. when the Chicago Bulls face the Utah Jazz and No. 2 draft pick Darryn Peterson on ESPN. Also on Monday, Veesaar’s Hawks meet the Boston Celtics at 6 p.m., and the Bucks, with Nance and Ryan, play the Phoenix Suns at 10 p.m., with both games airing on Prime Video.

Note that an experimental one-free-throw rule is in place. One, two and three free-throw sequences produce a single attempt worth the same total points, except for the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and all overtime periods when standard free‑throw rules apply.
