North Carolina added another transfer arm to its pitching staff Sunday, as right-hander Major Osbolt announced his commitment to the Tar Heels.
The former Walters State right-hander shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying. “Thank you Lord for this opportunity #goheels.”
The 6–3, 195-pound Osbolt heads to Chapel Hill after a breakout freshman season in Morristown, Tenn., at the junior college level, where he helped push Walters State back into the national spotlight. He originally commited to LSU before decommitting and heading to Walters State.
Osbolt earned NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week honors in late April, and weeks later he was part of a dominant tandem effort, combining for 20 strikeouts alongside a teammate in a TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament win over Chattanooga State.
Walters State rode that pitching depth all the way to the NJCAA JUCO World Series.
In a 9–1 win over Dyersburg State on March 26, he pitched five three-hit shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. In a 6–1 victory over Chattanooga State on May 7, he gave up three hits and an unearned run in six innings, striking out 14 batters.
Beyond the pitching mound, Osbolt also logged time at first base, giving Walters State’s coaching staff some flexibility with his role in the lineup. His combination of size, swing-and-miss stuff and durability across a heavy workload made him one of the more sought-after names in the junior college ranks this offseason.
Now, that path continues in the ACC, where Osbolt will help a North Carolina staff aiming to build on its recent trips to Omaha.
He joins former Walters State left-hander Tim Tyler (8–2, 4.67 ERA last season), who is also transferring to UNC.
