Coach Michael Malone’s first Carolina team will get two challenging exhibition contests before the games count.
UNC is set to face USC in an exhibition at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, before traveling to Indianapolis nine days later for a second exhibition against Indiana at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday, Oct. 18, in a game that had been announced in June.
The USC game, promoted as “The Preseason Premire,” is the night before the Carolina football team plays at Pittsburgh.
First Horizon Coliseum, still known to plenty of Tar Heel fans by its old name of the Greensboro Coliseum, is set to host a run of exhibition and non-conference basketball this season, including an expected December non-conference game against N.C. State. The ACC tournament next season will also be in Greensboro.
Ticket sales for the general public begin at 10 a.m. Friday.
Playing USC there gives Carolina a chance to test its new rotation against the Trojans of the Big Ten, entering their second season under Eric Musselman.
The Trojans went 18–14 last season (7–13 in the Big Ten) and lost their last eight games.
USC returns guards Rodney Rice and Alijah Arenas, who combined for 20.3 and 14.1 points per game, respectively. Rice suffered a season-ending shoulder injury after only six games. He got hurt while the Trojans were on their way to winning the Maui Invitational title.
In the transfer portal, Musselman brought in Georgetown guard KJ Lewis, Colgate guard Jalen Cox (17.9 points per game last season) and South Dakota guard Isaac Bruns (20.8 points per game), among others, to rebuild around that returning core after USC missed the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year.
Bruns will face his former South Dakota teammate Cameron Fens, who is transferring to UNC.
