Malone’s first UNC roster, players’ numbers finally official

By R.L. Bynum

Michael Malone’s first UNC roster is finally official.

His Tar Heels roster includes 11 newcomers and five returnees, led by Jarin Stevenson. Also back are Jaydon Young, Isaiah Denis (who goes from No. 5 to No. 2) and walk-ons Evan Smith and John Holbrook (who will wear No. 99).

Those five helped Carolina to a 24–9 season, and they step in to a season of reinvention under Malone.

Malone reshaped the roster with experience and variety. Graduate transfers Angelo Brizzi (top photo) and Cameron Fens arrive with experience. Senior Terrence Brown brings Pac-12 grit from Utah.

Fens will become the first UNC player to wear No. 54 since Vasco Evtimov in 1996–97.

Sophomores Matt Able, Neo Avdalas and Cade Bennerman add youth and upside from N.C. State, Virginia Tech and Northwestern, respectively. Alexandros Samodurov, a junior, joins after professional experience with Panathinaikos in Athens.

The freshman class arrives with promise. Maximo Adams from Los Angeles, Sayon Keita from Mali, Malloy Smith from Encino, Calif., and Kevin Thomas from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., each carry a distinct skill set. Keita’s background includes U18 competition with FC Barcelona, signaling a player accustomed to elite environments.

Smith, like his father, former UNC and NBA star Kenny Smith, will wear No. 30 as did his brother K.J. from 2017 to 2021.

Avdalas, who will be the first Tar Heel to wear No. 17 since Bill White in 1949–50, and Samodurov are the first Tar Heels from Greece. Keita becomes the program’s second African-born player since Makhtar Ndiaye. With these additions, the number of UNC’s all-time players from abroad reaches 18.

Cameron Fens will wear No. 54, the fifth Tar Heel to claim that number and the first since Vasco Evtimov in 1996–97.
