Heels lead twice, battle No. 1 Stanford men’s soccer team to draw

By R.L. Bynum

Stanford came to Dorrance Field with a win in every match and top-ranked in the country, but North Carolina matched the Cardinal blow for blow in a 2–2 draw on a steamy Friday night that could have gone either way in the final 20 minutes.

The Tar Heels (1–1–3, 0–0–2 ACC) struck first in the 13th minute.

Junior forward Bertil Rygaard Hansen forced a save out of the Stanford goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly, and junior midfielder Ryan Zellefrow was in the right spot at the right time to turn in the rebound, giving Carolina an early 1–0 edge.

It was the first goal as a Tar Heel for the Vermont transfer and the sixth of his career, capping a start to the match in which UNC had already survived one early scare.

Just eight minutes earlier, Stanford (6–0–1, 0–0–1) strung together a sequence of sharp passing that produced a clean look in front of goal. But a deflection to take enough pace off the shot for UNC redshirt freshman goaltender Alan Rutkowski to get down and make the save.

Carolina carried the lead into the second portion of the first half, but Stanford would not stay down for long.

In the 37th minute, a shot trickled agonizingly across the goal mouth before Cardinal forward Logan Tsopanoglou poked it in to tie the match at 1–1. The goal briefly hung in the balance while officials reviewed a potential offside call. But it stood, and Stanford had erased UNC’s advantage heading into halftime.

The Tar Heels answered almost immediately in the second half.

In the 51st minute, Rygaard Hansen blew past the Stanford back line, drawing a foul inside the box in the process. Senior defender Luca Nikolai stepped up and calmly slotted home the penalty, his first goal of the season and the ninth of his career, putting UNC back in front 2–1.

The lead lasted only two minutes. Stanford won a penalty in the 53rd minute, and Jack Pymm converted to level the score again, setting up a tense final half hour that neither team could break.

Carolina had its best chance to find a winner in the 72nd minute, when Nikolai rose for a header from point-blank range that ricocheted off the Stanford keeper. Freshman midfielder Faraji Ramani pounced on the loose ball and got a clean shot at the rebound, but his follow-up drifted just wide of the post, and the door on a potential UNC victory swung shut.

Stanford’s second-half penalty proved to be the difference between a signature road win and a hard-fought draw for the Tar Heels, who pushed the nation’s top-ranked team until the final whistle without finding the goal that would have completed the upset.

— UNC plays the second of five consecutive home games at 7 p.m. Tuesday (ACC Network Extra), facing American. The Eagles (1–3–2) won at Colgate 1–0 on Friday, getting their first win and only their second goal of the season.
— Carolina leads the all-time series 3–0–2.
