Even with the extensive financial investment in the Carolina football program, the amount of money spent on the Tar Heels’ roster is reportedly estimated to be only eighth in the ACC.
That’s the conclusion of a story reported in The Athletic, which got “as many independent, trustworthy estimates as possible from people inside and outside” for 68 programs: Notre Dame and the Power Four schools.
It concluded that UNC is spending between $20 million and $25 million on its roster.
In the ACC, that puts the Tar Heels behind No. 5 Miami ($44–$50 million), Clemson ($29–$32 million), Virginia Tech ($25–$30 million), Florida State ($23–$30 million), Georgia Tech ($23–$26 million), N.C. State ($22–$26 million) and No. 23 Louisville ($22–$25 million).
The schools spending the least among the Power Four, according to The Athletic, are Duke ($12–$15 million) and Boston College ($8–$13 million).
Schools at the top are No. 6 Ohio State ($49–$54 million), No. 21 Oregon ($48–$54 million) and No. 1 Texas ($45–$55 million). Eleven of the top 20 spenders are in the SEC, and six are in the Big Ten.
A big disparity exists in the average amount spent per conference team. The SEC average is between $33 million and $38 million, while it’s between $27 million and $31 million in the Big Ten, between $21 million and 25 million in the ACC and between $18 million and $22 million in the Big 12.
According to the report, Notre Dame spends between $41 million and $48 million.
