North Carolina finished third in the ACC women’s basketball race last season and is picked to finish at the same spot in the preseason poll of league coaches and media released on Tuesday.
Kate Harpring, the No. 4 player in ESPN’s Class of 2026 rankings, collected 493 votes to top the ACC Preseason All-Freshman Team, finishing 117 votes to easily top of Notre Dame’s Jacy Abii (376; ranked No. 9).
Harpring is the all-time leading scorer in Georgia high school history with 3,435 career points, and she led the Marist School to back-to-back 4A state titles. She was won two state player-of-the-year awards and was a McDonald’s All-American, making her the sixth signee with that latter honor under Coach Courtney Banghart.
Nyla Brooks earned a spot on the ACC Preseason All-Freshman Team last season.
Duke is the league favorite with 49 of the 76 first-place votes and 1,649 poll points, followed by Louisville (22, 1,580 points) and UNC (1, 1,462 points.)
Hannah Hidalgo of Notre Dame is the ACC Preseason Player of the Year and headlined the 10-player Preseason All-ACC Team, collecting 871 votes in the 76-voter ballot. Duke’s Toby Fournier (767) and Virginia’s Kymora Johnson (655) rounded out the top three.
