Tar Heels in NFL: Maye not satisfied after third straight big game; Williams scores TD

By R.L. Bynum

Drake Maye strung together a third consecutive strong game Sunday, throwing three touchdown passes in a 26–19 win over the New York Jets, but he and his coach are focused more on what went wrong than on the result.

Maye completed 18 of 32 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions (110.8 passer rating), and added 24 yards on four carries.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was not overly pleased with how the team played, and Maye agreed. Maye said the win was not the kind of performance the offense wants to build on.

“It was sloppy. It wasn’t clean,” said Maye, who had a 110.8 passer rating. He then spoke about balancing enjoying a victory with wanting more. “Coach always says you’ve got to take wins in this league and enjoy them.”

The performance extended a stretch in which Maye has been consistently productive. He threw three touchdown passes against Buffalo in Week 4 and four against Las Vegas in Week 5, and he now has 1,463 passing yards and 11 touchdowns on the season (117 of 183) with seven interceptions. ‘

He has at least 23 fantasy points the last three weeks (27.16 against Buffalo, 39.46 against Las Vegas and 23.8 against the Jets) after collecting fewer than 13 in the first three games.

Asked what has gone right during the run, he pointed to trust in his preparation and his reads. “I think trusting what I see on film,” Maye said. “I feel like I’m seeing it well and trying to throw it to the open guy and missed a few times today.”

He connected with Romeo Doubs on a 42-yard touchdown in the first quarter, found DeMario Douglas from 9 yards out with 14 seconds left in the second quarter, and hit tight end Hunter Henry from 7 yards in the fourth quarter. He played all 68 offensive snaps for the Patriots (4–2).

Maye said he also is learning to be more patient in the pocket, a point that came up because opponents have dropped eight defenders into coverage at times or rushed only three or four to muddle his reads. He acknowledged that his instinct is to move.

“I feel like if I’ve got time, I’m still a little bit antsy in there and antsy to move,” Maye said. The result in recent weeks has been better, he said. “When I got time in there the past two weeks, we’ve had 2 good plays when I’ve sat in there and just kept my eyes downfield.”

One of those plays was the touchdown to Doubs, which came when the Jets appeared to break down in coverage. Maye said he decided against throwing over the middle late and instead saw Doubs raise a hand and start running.

“Romeo made a great catch,” Maye said. He added that he would have liked to place the ball better. “I could have put it more on him and not have him dive.”

For the first time this season, Maye wasn’t sacked. He credited the group up front, which is playing through injuries.

“Those guys are playing through injuries. We got 3 go down today. Some of these guys are fighting hard. They’re fighting their butts off,” said Maye, who joked that his thank you would come in the form of food. “I’ve got to keep on bringing some more treats. Those guys are doing a heck of a job in there.”

Maye also spoke about receiver A.J. Brown, who was back on the field, catching three passes for 27 yards. He said Brown had a few plays he wishes he could have back, but he told his teammate not to worry.

“Just great to see him back out there,” Maye said. “He’s going to be one of the best players on the field every time he steps on it.”

You can watch Maye’s next game at 8:15 Thursday against Chicago on  Prime Video.
