Days after being ruled eligible, Trimble hits key late free throws as Louisville wins at Kansas

By R.L. Bynum

Five days after a Kentucky judge granted a temporary injunction on Friday restoring the eligibility of Seth Trimble and 37 other athletes, the former Carolina guard made an immediate impact for No. 11 Louisville.

Trimble, eligible to play a fifth season for now, made key free throws in the final minutes to help the Cardinals earn an 89–83 exhibition win over No. 17 Kansas on Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.

Trimble, one of 11 Louisville newcomers, started and scored 12 points, six in each half, and had the ball in his hands for most of the final minutes as the Cardinals tried to go deep into the shot clock to preserve a lead that got as big as 12 points with 12:09 left.

Trimble made two free throws with 1:46 left to stretch Louisville’s lead to four, then split a pair with 1:29 remaining and split two more with 43 seconds left, the latter giving the Cardinals a three-point advantage.

Louisville put the game away on three free throws in the final 27 seconds from Oregon transfer Jackson Shelstad, who led Louisville with 23 points. The Jayhawks managed only three points over the last 2:12.

Trimble shot 3–12 from the field and 6–10 at the free-throw line, but he filled the box score in other ways. He tied for the team highs with seven rebounds and four assists, while earning a steal but committing a team-high three turnovers, and finishing +8.

Louisville’s final exhibition is at 7 p.m. Saturday against Mercyhurst on the ACC Network.
