Tracking transfers: Jackson hits 18 in win over No. 7 Texas; Lubin nets 22; Cadeau, Michigan fall to No. 10 Houston

By R.L. Bynum

Ian Jackson’s best game at St. John’s and Ven-Allen Lubin’s perfect shooting day at N.C. State led a weekend of exhibition play for former North Carolina players, who got mixed results for their teams.

Jackson, a junior guard who spent the 2024–25 season at UNC, scored 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting and pulled down six rebounds as No. 13 St. John’s beat No. 7 Texas 87–74 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden to finish the preseason 3–0.

“Overall, I think this was Ian Jackson’s best game,” St. John’s coach Rick Pitino said, according to The Torch. “He looked like a complete player in every aspect, by far the best player on the floor today.”

A day earlier, Lubin was the most efficient player in the group. The graduate forward made all five of his shots and 12 of 13 free throws for 22 points, adding nine rebounds and four blocks in 22 minutes of N.C. State’s 130–66 rout of Lenoir-Rhyne at Lenovo Center.

“We want to bring toughness,” Lubin said, according to a Pack Pride transcript. “It’s a mindset and a level of physicality we want to bring into the game. We want to continue to compete and battle down low because we know we’re going to see that against every team. They’re going to have physical guys down low, and we have to match that physicality or exceed it. Our message to each other is that we want to dominate and bring that physicality first. We want to punch first every time and make sure they feel us.”

Derek Dixon had a quieter Friday in Arizona’s 85–54 home win over Eastern Washington at McKale Center.

The sophomore guard started and scored six points on 2-for-7 shooting (2-for-5 from 3) with five assists, three rebounds and a plus-18 rating, but he also committed four of the Wildcats’ 20 turnovers.

“I just thought it was guys being really soft and maybe a little bit selfish,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said, according to Wildcat Authority. “We did things today where if you remember those Mad Lib books, they were kind of just filling in their own words. Ivan [Kharchenkov], Caleb [Holt], and Derek today combined for 13 turnovers. That’s tough sledding.”

Kyan Evans started for Minnesota in its 89–86 double-overtime loss at Creighton on Friday but played only 13 minutes after hurting his right hip in the first half. The school described his absence as a precaution.

Evans had six points on 3-of-4 shooting with four rebounds and three assists before leaving, and Minnesota rallied from 18 points down behind Isaac Asuma’s 32 points.

Elliot Cadeau and Elina Aarnisalo each had tough Sunday afternoons against ranked opponents.

Cadeau, the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player in Michigan’s national title run, scored nine points on 3-of-6 shooting with three assists and two turnovers in the No. 16 Wolverines’ 83–66 loss to No. 10 Houston in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Cadeau fouled out of a game that featured 50 fouls and 58 free throws, and Houston’s Joseph Tugler hit him in the head on a flagrant-one foul.

Aarnisalo, a junior guard back at UCLA after one season at North Carolina, scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting with eight rebounds and three assists in the No. 11 Bruins’ 81–64 loss to No. 6 Texas in Cedar Park, Texas.

UCLA committed 18 turnovers, which led to 20 Texas points.

Several other former Tar Heels play exhibitions this week. Luka Bogavac and Oklahoma State close their exhibition schedule at Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Tuesday (B1G+); Will Shaver’s Samford team plays Jacksonville State on Monday and Auburn on Thursday; and Liza Astakhova’s BYU team hosts Western Colorado at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Seth Trimble and Louisville play at home Wednesday against Mercyhurst (ACC Network).
