Hubert Davis returns to TV work, joining TNT Sports

Hubert Davis is returning to television after 14 seasons as part of the Carolina’s men’s basketball program.

Davis, who UNC fired on March 24 as head coach, is joining TNT Sports as a regular contributor to its men’s college basketball game and studio coverage during the 2026–27 season, the network announced Tuesday in a press release.

Davis, who has said he wants to coach again, will make his debut Thursday, Nov. 5, during TNT Sports’ Big East and Big 12 tripleheader on truTV and HBO Max. Davis will join host Tim Doyle and analysts Dalen Cuff and Seth Davis for an evening featuring Long Island at Seton Hall (6:30 p.m.), South Florida at DePaul (8:30 p.m.) and Cal Poly at No. 5 Arizona (10:30 p.m.).

The move marks a return to broadcasting for Davis, who worked as a college basketball analyst for ESPN before joining Roy Williams’ coaching staff at Carolina in 2012. Davis spent nine seasons as an assistant before succeeding Williams as the Tar Heels’ head coach in 2021.

His five seasons leading UNC were highlighted by a run to the 2022 NCAA championship game in his first season. The Tar Heels entered that tournament as a No. 8 seed, beat defending national champion Baylor in overtime, upset No. 1 seed Duke in the Final Four and fell to Kansas in the championship game.

Davis also guided Carolina to the ACC regular-season championship and a No. 1 NCAA tournament seed in 2024, when the Tar Heels reached the Sweet 16. His final season ended with a first-round NCAA tournament loss to VCU.

Before joining ESPN, Davis spent 12 seasons in the NBA after starring at UNC under Dean Smith. Known for his outside shooting, he played for the New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets.

TNT Sports said Davis will contribute regularly to game and studio coverage throughout the season, although the announcement did not specify how frequently he will appear or identify additional assignments beyond opening week.

He joins a commentator lineup that includes former Auburn coach Bruce Pearl, former NBA players Jalen Rose and Jamal Mashburn, and former Duke star Grant Hill.

This will be TNT Sports’ second full season of men’s college basketball coverage. TNT Sports and CBS Sports will again combine to televise the NCAA tournament, including the Final Four and national championship game in April.
