Tar Heels in NBA: Wilson continues strong NBA start in blowout loss; RJ Davis in G League camp

By R.L. Bynum

Caleb Wilson’s impressive start to his NBA career continued Monday night, even as the Chicago Bulls endured their most lopsided loss of the young season on a day that RJ Davis joined a G League camp.

The former Carolina star scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and contributed three assists, two blocks and a steal in Chicago’s 134–99 road loss to Boston. The 6–10 rookie has scored in double figures in each of his first four NBA games and is averaging 21 points.

Wilson’s performance was one of Chicago’s few bright spots in a game the Celtics controlled. He made 7 of 15 shots, including one 3-pointer, and played nearly 32 minutes. He also committed three turnovers and three fouls.

The Bulls were outscored by only three points while Wilson was on the court in the 35-point loss.

Wilson’s outside shooting remains a work in progress. Wilson made 1 of 5 from beyond the arc Monday, leaving him at 17.9% through four games.

Wilson is averaging 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks through four games. He is shooting 41.9% from the field and 73.9% from the free-throw line.

The Bulls return home Wednesday to face New York.

Davis joins Austin Spurs’ G League training camp roster

Davis has another opportunity to continue his professional career after being named Monday to the Austin Spurs’ training camp roster, along with former Duke player Maliq Brown.

San Antonio waived Davis on Oct. 13, and he is one of 14 players invited to camp with its G League affiliate.

The move keeps Davis in the San Antonio organization after he signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the NBA club in September. He appeared in three preseason games, averaging 8.8 minutes and scoring seven total points while shooting 27.3% from the field.

The former ACC Player of the Year averaged 18.3 points and five assists last season with the South Bay Lakers in the G League.

Davis being at Austin’s training camp roster does not mean he has earned a spot on San Antonio’s NBA roster or signed a two-way contract. He will compete for a place on the G League team, which opens Nov. 6 on the road against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

Sharpe scores 11 in Nets loss

Brooklyn center Day’Ron Sharpe started and contributed 11 points, four rebounds and an assist in 16 minutes during the Nets’ 136–109 home loss Sunday to Indiana. He made three of four field-goal attempts, including his only 3-pointer, and converted four of seven free throws.

Sharpe is averaging 8.7 points and 6.7 rebounds through three games, shooting 52.6% from the field.

Sharpe’s Brooklyn teammate, Drake Powell, made his season debut in the same game, playing 12 minutes off the bench. Powell didn’t score, missing two free-throw attempts, but collected two rebounds and three assists.

Injuries continue to sideline Johnson, White

Denver forward Cameron Johnson missed Monday’s 134–114 home loss to Golden State because of an ankle injury. Johnson has played only once this season, scoring five points with two rebounds and an assist.
