Tracking transfers: High, Lubin score 20, Powell hits 6 3s as 12 of 13 former Heels start Monday openers

By R.L. Bynum

Ven-Allen Lubin didn’t miss a shot from the floor, Zayden High scored more points in one game than he did all last season at North Carolina, and Jonathan Powell made six 3-pointers.

All three started and won, setting the pace for the 13 former UNC men’s and women’s players who opened their seasons on Monday. Ten scored in double figures and Luka Bogavac, the lone reserve, led Oklahoma State in scoring.

Lubin and High score 20 apiece

Lubin had 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in N.C. State’s 83–64 home victory over Campbell. He went 8-for-8 from the floor and made all three of his 3-point attempts, matching his total of the latter from last season in one night.

“That’s the work I put in this offseason,” Lubin said, according to an Inside Pack Sports transcript. “I just kept getting better at it and staying confident.”

Campbell coach Jimmie Williams saw what that added range could mean for opponents who already have to account for Lubin inside.

“Lubin is a grown man,” Williams said, according to the IPS transcript. “If he has a night like tonight, he’s going to create a lot of problems for the ACC.”

High needed only 22 minutes to collect 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals in South Florida’s 98–71 home win over Charleston Southern. He made nine of 15 shots, including a 3-pointer after going 0-for-8 from beyond the arc in his final season at Carolina. He scored 18 points in 23 games for UNC last season.

South Florida coach Chris Mack said Charleston Southern’s defense called for High to attack the big man waiting in the paint.

“I thought he did a terrific job,” Mack said.

Powell scored a career-high 18 points in Pittsburgh’s 95–57 win over Rider, going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc and adding six rebounds and two assists. He made four 3-pointers before halftime as Pitt built a 50–26 lead.

Bogavac scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds in 15 minutes as host Oklahoma State beat Incarnate Word 91–60. His second 3-pointer beat the first-half buzzer, capping an 11–0 run that sent the Cowboys to a 54–17 halftime lead.

Elsewhere among former UNC players:

—Taliyah Henderson came off the bench in all 33 of her games at UNC last season. In her first college start, she scored 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and had two steals as host Clemson beat Radford 68–47. Only Mackenzie Nelson, with 16 points, scored more for the Tigers.
—Will Shaver scored 17 points, made three of four 3-point attempts and added six rebounds and four blocks in 18 minutes as Samford beat Berry 87–58.
—James Brown blocked four shots and added four steals, seven rebounds and 11 points in Howard’s 72–62 loss at Yale.
—Derek Dixon scored 18 points and made four 3-pointers in No. 5 Arizona’s 84–75 loss to No. 22 UCLA in Las Vegas.

—Kyan Evans scored four points and added six rebounds, four assists and two steals in Minnesota’s 85–50 victory over North Dakota.
