No. 12 UNC gets more efficiency from Ustby, many other good efforts in rout of TCU

CHAPEL HILL — The model of efficiency through two games is Carolina’s do-everything wing Alyssa Ustby. The talented junior, who showed in the offseason that her talents include kicking field goals at Kenan Stadium, said she was “a little banged up” after her September participation on the United States three-on-three team in Romania and summer workouts. That limited her in the preseason and led to minutes restrictions. She’s making the most of every minute. Ustby scored 14 points in 18 minutes Saturday as No. 12 Carolina (2–0) took control in the second quarter and cruised to a 75–48 victory over TCU (1–1).

No. 2 UNC advances in classic, making ACC final by beating Duke on PKs

CARY — North Carolina loosened its stranglehold on ACC women’s soccer last season and with a couple of league losses earlier this season. The No. 2-ranked Tar Heels are one win away from regaining their traditional dominant spot. But Duke didn’t make it easy in the ACC tournament semifinals Thursday evening in a match full of tension, physical play and frustration on both sides.

Javonte Williams out for the season

With one unfortunate play, Javonte Williams’ second NFL season in Denver is reportedly already over after four games. According to multiple reports, Williams is out for the season after tearing the ACL and LCL in his right knee on the first play of the second half of the Broncos’ 32–23 road loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Defense has best game of season as UNC rolls by Hokies

CHAPEL HILL — Carolina always knew that the offense would be prolific and that the Tar Heels have plenty of potential if they can somehow get it together on defense.
That beleaguered unit did that for one day against a struggling Virginia Tech offense, and the test from here will be how much they can build on that against a quality opponent. UNC’s defense produced easily its best performance of the season in a 41–10 victory Saturday in its ACC opener at Kenan Stadium.

After Meza steadies UNC in win, Dorrance calls her greatest defensive midfielder he’s coached

CHAPEL HILL — Coming off an emotional victory against rival Duke, No. 2 Carolina couldn’t find the energy early for its last non-conference women’s soccer match and came out flat against an aggressive and rested Central Florida team. Coach Anson Dorrance hoped to hold star midfielder Sam Meza out of the game, but that plan, which he called “a huge mistake,” got booted away 18 minutes into the match.

Ustby makes U.S. three-on-three team for competition in Romania

USA Basketball has named Carolina junior Alyssa Ustby to the team that will compete in the 2022 FIBA 3×3 U23 Nations League Final, which is scheduled next week on Sept. 14–16 in Constanta, Romania. Ustby was part of the American team that qualified for the Final of the three-on-three competition by winning the Nations League Americas conference last month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Ustby scored 76 points in 15 games during that competition as the United States went 18–0.

It’s been a ‘freakin’ awesome’ run for Forbes, UNC baseball team

CHAPEL HILL — “That’s freakin’ awesome.” It’s become a common way for UNC coach Scott Forbes to describe the Tar Heels’ many baseball wins since the exam break. The ACC champions head into the Chapel Hill Regional this weekend with wins in seven consecutive games and 12 of their last 13.

UNC atop two updated way-too-early men’s basketball Top 25 lists

The level of respect for the Carolina men’s basketball program soared after the Tar Heels’ run to the national championship game. It’s still rising. When ESPN came out with its first way-too-early preseason men’s basketball Top 25 in early April, Carolina checked in at an impressive No. 5. But after an April full of good news for Coach Hubert Davis, ESPN’s latest list released Tuesday, put together by Jeff Borzello, joins Gary Parrish’s CBS Sports list in putting the Tar Heels No. 1.
