I like
0:01
I like them.
0:02
Thank you. Thank you.
0:03
You don't want your wide receiver
0:04
wearing glasses, right?
0:05
No, no, no. If anything contact, nobody
0:07
would know.
0:08
So, what's it been like being coached by
0:11
coach Bellich? And how has he as far as
0:15
being relatable? How has he been
0:16
relatable to you guys?
0:17
It's It's been great. I've enjoyed
0:19
everything about it. Um I've learned so
0:21
much just from the spring. Um we watch
0:24
film every day as a team and then we
0:26
also uh split up into position groups.
0:28
We have a great uh position coach, coach
0:30
Gary McGee is a great coach. I even uh
0:32
have watched film with um our um
0:34
quarterback's coach and the OC coach
0:35
Kisses. I've watched film with them, but
0:37
also I've watched film with uh Steve
0:39
Bellich, Brian Bichc. I've done some
0:41
stuff with Mondo, our DB's coach. And um
0:43
just the thing that Bichc brought to us
0:45
is just it's a blessing. We have so many
0:46
great coaches and so many great just
0:49
people overall. And then in uh terms of
0:51
being relatable, he's um coached at the
0:53
highest level. He's coached the greatest
0:54
players of all time. So, it's just like
0:56
you want to do what he's telling you to
0:58
do. There's no need to even try and go
1:00
against it. It's worked for so many
1:01
people, so why wouldn't it work for me?
1:03
So, I mean, I feel like it's just the
1:04
trust factor that a lot of us have in
1:06
him, and it's just like whatever he
1:07
tells you to do, we're willing to do it
1:08
for him.
1:09
How do you feel like you've grown during
1:11
your time at UC?
1:13
Um, I feel like I've grown a lot. Um,
1:14
the biggest thing I would say is I've
1:16
grown in my faith a lot. Um last year
1:18
going into uh camp I had a a shoulder
1:20
injury and it kind of messed with my
1:22
mental a lot and I was able to um our
1:24
chaplain Mitch um he he really picked me
1:27
up a lot and I've grown in my faith uh
1:29
like huge and that's the biggest thing
1:30
I'll say that's um driven me to just
1:32
being um just a better guy on the field
1:34
and also off the field just going to
1:35
church on Sundays. We have a Bible study
1:37
on Wednesday Wednesdays as a team. And
1:39
um I would say that's the biggest thing
1:41
cuz um my faith carries like I said on
1:43
the field and off the field just living
1:45
for uh my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
1:47
So I'll say that's the biggest way I
1:48
feel like I've known.
1:49
What was it like for you going through
1:51
this spring where obviously you know
1:52
kind of new plays, new teammates, some
1:54
guys that even were in the spring, you
1:56
know, maybe left, you get new guys now.
1:58
Just what was it like for you adjusting
2:00
to, you know, maybe the style offense
2:02
that you guys were looking at doing? Um,
2:04
I feel like the adjustment I feel like
2:06
it was it was kind of a big adjustment,
2:07
but also they kind of like eased us into
2:09
it. You know, we had um meetings where
2:11
we go over the uh play slowly before we
2:13
went out there and run and we'd have
2:14
walkthroughs and stuff like that and um
2:16
some stuff with the coaches. So, I feel
2:17
like it was definitely an adjustment,
2:19
you know, but um I feel like we're um
2:21
we're we're going to be pretty good
2:23
going into this year. I feel like uh
2:24
offensively I like what we're doing. Um
2:26
we're doing a lot of different things.
2:27
Uh, big shout out to Coach Kens and
2:29
Coach Bich as well. But, um, I feel like
2:31
we were we'll be pretty good
2:32
offensively.
2:33
You mentioned Kens who was, you know,
2:35
here last year. Like, do you notice like
2:36
similarities from last year's to this
2:38
year's as far as the style of
2:40
Uh, of course, a little bit. But, um, I
2:42
feel like it's definitely Coach
2:43
Kitchen's offense. He's definitely like
2:44
he's he's made it his and um, like I
2:46
said, just I got the utmost trust in
2:48
Coach Ken. So, I feel like whatever he
2:49
calls, we were ready to run it.
2:50
You've seen the work that Max has put in
2:52
to try to come back from that injury. I
2:54
know it's an open quarterback battle,
2:55
but what what have you seen from what
2:57
he's been able to do and and what kind
2:59
of inspiration maybe do you take from
3:00
what he's put himself through?
3:02
Um, resilience. Max is it's hard to come
3:05
back from that injury. And the fact that
3:06
he's back running with us, he's he's not
3:08
only is he back running with us, he's
3:09
back competing with us during
3:10
conditioning. Like Max always was a
3:12
competitor and now he's back 100%. He's
3:14
right back exactly where he was last
3:15
year. He's back competing. He's not
3:17
missing any throws. He's being the Max
3:18
Johnson that everybody knows. So, I feel
3:20
like just for Max, man, it's just he's
3:22
come such a such a long way and um he's
3:25
just been he's been amazing. He's been
3:26
amazing and uh train he's done a lot of
3:28
stuff in the training room and the
3:29
weight room, getting a lot of his
3:30
strength back as well. So,
3:31
what are your impressions of Gio and
3:33
working with him and what kind of
3:34
quarterback would you say he is?
3:36
Uh Gio's a great guy. I've um I've
3:38
gotten close to Gio in a very short
3:40
time. U we talk every day, even uh over
3:43
this break, we've talked every pretty
3:44
much every day. We've been training
3:46
together. We've been doing a lot of
3:47
stuff together. But um off the field,
3:49
Gio is a great guy, man. He's somebody
3:50
that I can um spend time with, somebody
3:52
that I talk to a lot. Even if a lot of
3:55
time we talk, it's not even about
3:56
football. It's just we want to have a
3:58
great relationship and that starts with
3:59
just knowing each other off the field.
4:00
So, I feel like Gio's a great guy. And
4:02
we talk about on the field. I mean, the
4:04
numbers do talk to him. There's no need
4:05
for me to really talk more about what he
4:06
can do. We all know what he can do. He's
4:08
a great athlete. He's great with the
4:09
ball in his hands. He's going to put you
4:10
put you and your team and your program
4:12
in positions to win. So, I'm u excited
4:14
to be able to have the opportunity to
4:16
share the field with him. He's supposed
4:17
to be here, but but he's not on this
4:19
last list. You know what's going on?
4:22
What is that?
4:22
Gio, you're supposed to be here.
4:24
Oh, Gio is here.
4:25
He's just not on the press conference
4:26
list.
4:27
Yeah, he's here.
4:27
When you hear that that you guys have
4:29
sold out all your games, I mean, you've
4:30
been around the program, the excitement
4:32
level around it. Are are you seeing that
4:33
in your daily life? Are you hearing from
4:35
people? Like, how can you judge that
4:36
that excitement level?
4:37
Um, really, I feel like there's a lot of
4:39
noise going around. You know, when you
4:40
get the greatest coach of all time, it's
4:41
going to be a lot of buzz going on, but
4:43
that's not really what we're worried
4:43
about. all worried about just getting
4:44
better every day and just staying where
4:46
our feet are and really just just
4:47
growing together as a team. So, I mean
4:49
feel like it's great for the hype. It's
4:50
great for the program of course, but I
4:51
mean like I said, we're focused on
4:53
winning games and whoever's there is
4:54
there.
4:55
Is that hard to do?
4:56
Um de definitely, but I mean I feel like
4:59
it's just it's you got to stay focused
5:00
and I mean you're going to have
5:01
distractions no matter what you're
5:02
doing, no matter what your profession
5:03
is. So, it's just a just the maturity
5:05
level just to know like we can't go play
5:08
TCU tomorrow. We can't play them until
5:10
September 1st. So, why are we looking
5:11
that far? Let's focus on us getting
5:13
better and what we're doing every day.
5:14
Last one.
5:15
Oh, thank you. Along the lines of what
5:17
you're talking about with Gio and trying
5:19
to get to know him in a short amount of
5:20
time, how have you seen him try to
5:23
understand the playbook? Uh cuz I mean
5:26
he hasn't even had practice yet
5:27
technically like what do you see from
5:29
him in terms of trying to get to know it
5:32
on the run here cuz it's you know
5:34
Gio's adjusted amount of time.
5:36
Yeah, he's adjusted very well. Gio has
5:38
um there's a lot of times like I said we
5:40
we'll watch film together. me and him
5:41
will watch film oneonone, watch film
5:43
with other receivers and we'll watch
5:44
film with the coaches as well. And um in
5:46
terms of learning the plays, he
5:47
processes stuff so quick and then he's
5:49
able to call stuff out and he's like,
5:51
"Well, if you see this, this is what I
5:52
want you to do." And now it feels like
5:53
we're going back and forth and not
5:55
really like an argument, more just like
5:56
two football players just talking about
5:58
what we both want to do. Cuz I mean, I
6:00
need him just as much as he needs me.
6:02
And I feel like we're going to we bounce
6:03
we balance off each other perfectly and
6:04
we just uh the same thing with Max as
6:06
well. Really, same thing with all the
6:07
quarterbacks. All the quarterbacks. We a
6:08
lot of us, we all watch film together
6:10
from uh Bryce Baker to Max to DJ to Tori
6:13
to uh everybody. Gio will be in there.
6:15
All of us would be just watching film
6:16
together. We like to do stuff as a group
6:17
instead of being singled out. So, I feel
6:19
like he's um grasping the playbook well
6:22
because a lot of us are helping him out
6:23
as well, but he's also pointing stuff
6:25
out to me that I maybe I didn't
6:26
recognize in the spring. He's like,
6:27
"Well, if I see this, maybe I want you
6:29
to do this." And I'll be like, "That
6:30
makes sense and I can do that."
6:31
Do do y'all just to follow up real
6:32
quick, do y'all try to get out there on
6:34
the air and do stuff, too?
6:36
Of course. We throw We throw often. We
6:38
uh we throw often. Um as you know, Gio's
6:40
left-handed and that's a little bit of
6:41
an adjustment, but I mean, I've made
6:43
sure like I've made him let him know
6:45
that like I want to throw as much as we
6:46
can just so I can make sure that we're
6:48
both as comfortable with each other as
6:49
we can be. And as for uh Max as well,
6:51
he's a left-handed quarterback, too. So,
6:53
just um you know, we just want to throw
6:55
as much as we can just to make sure
6:56
we're all on target cuz I mean, you
6:57
never know who's going to be out there.
6:58
You never know what could happen. So,
6:59
just want to have chemistry with all the
7:01
guys. Never know. Y'all might see me at
7:02
quarterback.
7:05
just coming up, you know,
7:07
he threw a pass
