UNC linebackers coach Collins brings NFL pedigree to his first coaching job

CHAPEL HILL — When Bill Belichick called, Jamie Collins didn’t hesitate. He retired from the NFL in 2023 after a 10-year career as a linebacker that included making the Pro Bowl in 2015 and winning a Super Bowl in 2014, both with Belichick. Collins was ready when Belichick offered him the job as Carolina’s inside linebackers coach.

Belichick has adapted to Maginness, his first rugby-style punter

CHAPEL HILL — The ball left Tom Maginness’ foot on his rugby-style punt on a rainy night in Charlotte after a three-and-out deep in UNC territory, soaring 55 yards. It was the kind of punt Bill Belichick loves. A play that flips the field and makes it easier for his defense. The legendary coach has built a strong special teams identity, and that includes his senior punter from Melbourne, Australia.

The teams combined for a single field goal in the final 30 minutes as the Tar Heels head up I-85 with the win.

Heels grind out first win of Belichick era

CHARLOTTE — North Carolina still has plenty of work, but may have found a budding running back star on its way to a decisive first victory in the Bill Belichick era. The Tar Heels ground out a 20–3 victory over Charlotte on Saturday before a Jerry Richardson Stadium record crowd of 19,223. With a 14-point halftime lead, UNC was content to lean on its rushing attack and burn clock to put away the victory.

Javonte Williams scores twice in impressive Cowboys debut; Hampton plays Friday

In his first game wearing the star, Javonte Williams wasted no time making his presence felt. The Dallas Cowboys signed Williams in March to a one-year, $3.5 million deal after four seasons in Denver, and the running back delivered both of the Cowboys’ touchdowns in Thursday night’s 24–20 road loss to the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
