The No. 24 Tar Heels led by 30 points in the third quarter before winning 81–62 Sunday at Carmichael Arena behind Deja Kelly’s career-high 31 points. They now get a chance to prove how good they are when they visit No. 5 N.C. State on Thursday night. That will give UNC (13–0, 3–0 ACC) their toughest test of the season and their first ranked opponent.

UNC thumps bad BC team in one of best overall games of season

While it’s hard to gauge a performance against a bad and rusty Boston College team, North Carolina looked the best it has all season, particularly in the first half, on both ends of the court in a blowout win. The Tar Heels (10–3, 2–0 ACC) created some of the best ball movement of the season, with players coming off screens for open shots and driving to the basket. UNC needed a few minutes to shake off the rust from a 12-day break but rolled to 91–65 ACC victory Sunday after missing its first seven shots.

Faced with another stretch of pandemic-fueled scheduling chaos, Carolina coach Hubert Davis is focusing on what he can control and fixing his team’s issues. At the top of that list is a defense that gave up layup lines and many easy shots in embarrassing losses to Tennessee and Kentucky, and the need for energy and toughness to prevent any more games like that.
