Tar Heels in NBA: Ellington scores 11 in season debut

By R.L. Bynum

Wayne Ellington made his season debut with 11 points in the Detroit Pistons’ 128–120 road loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night.

Ellington didn’t play in the first two games for the 0–3 Pistons before entering Monday’s game in the first period. His first shot of the season, a 3-point attempt with 2:08 left in that quarter, went in, the first of a trio of 3-pointer in the game.

After the New York Knicks waived Ellington last month, he signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the Pistons. He’s fighting for playing time at shooting guard behind Delon Wright and Svi Mykhailuk.

On a light night in the NBA, only two other UNC players had games and neither played.

For the second time in as many games, Justin Jackson didn’t get off the bench for Oklahoma City. The Thunder fell to 1–1 with a 110–109 home loss to the Utah Jazz.

Nassir Little again wasn’t active for the Portland Trail Blazers in their 115–107 road victory over the Los Angeles Lakers just as with the previous two games. He has been listed as inactive due to health and safety protocols.
