The Dallas Mavericks signed Theo Pinson to a 10-day contract Monday using the league’s hardship exception.
Under new league rules that the NBA and the union agreed upon, teams are allowed to exceed the 15-man maximum roster when they have at least four players sick or injured for longer than two weeks.
Dallas is off Monday but plays at home Tuesday against Minnesota and Thursday against Milwaukee.
It’s a strange turn of events considering he has switched organizations, at least temporarily, with 2017 NCAA champion teammate Justin Jackson.
Jackson, who has been playing for the Dallas Mavericks’ G League team, the Texas Legends, signed with Boston. Pinson had been playing with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League team, and is now with the Mavericks.
Mavericks who out under the NBA’s health-and-safety protocols are Reggie Bullock and Josh Green. Also out are Luka Doncic (ankle soreness), Willie Cauley-Stein (personal reasons), Frank Ntilikina (illness) and Eugene Omoruyi (right foot injury).
This will be Pinson’s first time on an NBA roster since last season when he played sparingly for the New York Knicks. He got into 17 games for the Knicks last season, playing 34 minutes and scoring two points.
Pinson has played 68 career NBA games with Brooklyn and New York, scoring 203 points in 610 minutes.
In 13 G League games this season, Pinson is averaging 15.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists.
