Tar Heels in NBA: Green, Johnson, Bullock advance to next round; Johnson’s Suns to meet Bullock’s Mavs

Danny Green, Cameron Johnson and Reggie Bullock all helped their teams win road games Thursday night to win their first-round NBA playoff series in six games, with the latter two now facing off in the next round.

Green’s Philadelphia 76ers, the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, advanced to a conference semifinal series against the No. 1-seed Miami Heat, with Game 1 Monday in Miami at 7:30 p.m. (TNT).

Johnson’s Phoenix Suns, the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, will meet Bullock’s No. 4-seed Dallas Mavericks in a conference semifinals series. Game 1 is at 10 p.m. Monday in Phoenix (TNT).

Green scored 12 points on four 3-pointers with five rebounds as Philadelphia finished off a 4–2 first-round series victory over the Toronto Raptors with a 132–97 road victory. Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 33 points.

Philadelphia coach Doc Rivers was impressed with Green’s poise in the game.

“If you’re going to go on the road, you should bring Danny Green with you,” Rivers said. “Really. He is not fazed at all.”

Green made nine of 16 3-point attempts in the final two games of the series.

Cameron Johnson made some huge plays in a fourth-quarter sequence as Phoenix won its first-round series 4–2 over the New Orleans Jazz with a 115–109 road victory Thursday.

Johnson, who scored 13 points and a pair of 3-pointers, had a stretch where he scored off an offensive rebound, got a steal and scored a transition 3-pointer to give the Suns a lead with 8:56 left.

With Devin Booker, who scored 13 points, back in the lineup, Johnson was again coming off the bench. Johnson did start the second half.

The big boost for Phoenix was season-high 33 points from former Wake Forest guard Chris Paul.

Bullock battled foul trouble and finished with six points, his lowest scoring output of the series, but Dallas pulled out a 98–96 Game 6 victory at Utah behind 24 points each from Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson.

Utah’s Bojan Bogdanovic missed a potential game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Bullock still played 44 minutes despite picking up five fouls and had six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Theo Pinson wasn’t active for any game in the series.
