Tar Heels in Summer League: Manek scores nearly a point a minute in Hornets victory

By R.L. Bynum

Brady Manek continues to make a solid contribution to the Charlotte Hornets’ Summer League team even though his playing time continues to be limited.

In 15 minutes off the bench Wednesday afternoon, Manek contributed 12 points and seven rebounds and was +12 in the Hornets’ 91–80 victory in Las Vegas over Cleveland, pushing their record to 2–1.

Manek came out of the game late in the third quarter holding a towel to his head after banging heads with the Cavaliers’ Cameron Young while playing defense. He appeared to be fine because he returned to the game in the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, he got his one assist on a lob pass to former Duke star Mark Williams. Williams also scored 12 points but played nearly 20 minutes.

“I could have gone up with a contested bad shot or dished it off to Mark,” Manek told The Charlotte Observer. “ I appreciate that he laid it in. He didn’t dunk it. If you’re 7–1, you’ve got to dunk that. But it’s OK. It was a really good play. I like having a guy down low like him, just being able to block shots, get rebounds and get plays like that. Even if it was a bad pass, he’s going to be there to get it.”

Manek was 2 of 5 from 3-point range and is 5 for 15 through three Summer League games.

He bettered his combined point output from the first two games and equaled his field goals and rebounds total. Manek is +43 combined in the Summer League season.
