Carolina’s Sept. 24 home game with Notre Dame has been set for 3:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN or ABC. It’s the fourth consecutive Kenan Stadium game against the Irish that has started at 3:30 p.m., with the previous three airing on ABC.
It will be Notre Dame’s ninth game at Kenan Stadium, and both of UNC’s wins (although one vacated) have come in Chapel Hill.
The Irish will play a new quarterback after sophomore Tyler Buchner suffered a significant sprain in his non-throwing arm in their 26–21 loss to Marshall and is likely out for the season. The new starter is expected to be junior Drew Pyne, who was 3 of 6 for 20 yards with one touchdown, one interception and one sack in relief of Buchner.
While UNC (3–0) has an open date this weekend, Notre Dame (0–2) will play host at 2:30 p.m. Saturday to Cal (NBC).
When Notre Dame came to Chapel Hill in 2020 (31–17 Irish win), 2017 (a 33–10 Notre Dame victory) and 2008 (a 29–24 UNC win that the NCAA later vacated), all games both started at 3:30 p.m. and aired on ABC. All Irish home games, including the 44–34 UNC loss in 2021, the 50–43 loss in 2014 and the 45–26 defeat in 2006, air on NBC.
Notre Dame has won the last four meetings and 10 of the last 11 and leads the series 20–2 (officially 21–1 because of the vacated UNC victory).
Notre Dame won 42–6 in the first meeting in 1949 at Yankee Stadium.
