Live Action details and how to watch if you can’t attend

By R.L. Bynum

You’ll get your first look at UNC men’s and women’s basketball teams that both have high expectations at Live Action with Carolina Basketball at 7:30 Friday night, Oct. 7.

It was originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 30, but was postponed.

The name comes from one of Coach Hubert Davis’ frequently used phrases, “live action,” which fans first learned about during a halftime television interview during the Final Four. While “Late Night” was the traditional name of the event, it never really happened late in the evening.

Like last year, the new version of the preseason basketball event doesn’t include the players performing skits or dances.

Davis’ men’s team went 29–10 last season and made the NCAA championship game. UNC finished the season No. 2 in the final coaches poll and is No. 1 in Blue Ribbon Magazine’s preseason ranking.

Coach Courtney Banghart’s women’s team made the Sweet 16 last season and finished 25–7, falling to eventual national champion South Carolina in the Gamecocks’ toughest NCAA tournament game. Carolina’s women are also expected to be highly ranked in the preseason polls.

If you can’t make it to the Smith Center, the event will stream on ACC Network Extra (ESPN3), with Kyle Straub, Matt Krause (the voice of Carolina women’s basketball) and former UNC player Marcus Ginyard on the call.

Brian “B Daht” McLaughlin, the in-game host during regular season home games, will be the host for the event, which will include player and staff introductions, a 3-point shooting contest involving men’s and women’s players and intra-squad scrimmages for both teams.

If you plan to attend, the event is free, with the arena opening at 6 p.m. and most of the arena is general admission seating. Students should enter at Gate C, reserved-seating guests in Gate D and all other fans at gates A and B.

Parking passes will be required for the Bowles Lot and the Craige Deck, with general parking for $10 available at the Bell Tower Deck, the Manning lot, the Jackson Deck and the Rams Head Deck.

The Tar Heel Express shuttle service that takes you from the Friday Center Park to the front of the Smith Center costs $5 for a roundtrip and $3 one way.

In some scheduling news Tuesday, UNC’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge men’s game at Indiana will start at 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 30 and air on ESPN. The women’s team’s game at Indiana the next night, on Dec. 1, was previously announced as a 6 p.m. start to air on Big Ten Network.
