Tar Heels in NBA: White, Johnson have their best games of season; Anthony gets contract extension

By R.L. Bynum

There was good and bad for former UNC point guards Coby White and Cole Anthony on Friday, and it was all good for Cameron Johnson.

Although his Chicago Bulls (3–3) lost on Friday night, White had his best game of the season. While Cole Anthony didn’t play because of an injury, he had a good day off the court because the Orlando Magic extended his contract through the 2023–24 season. Johnson scored a season-high 16 points as the 4–1 Phoenix Suns rolled to a win.

White (13.2) and Johnson (14.9) both produced their highest game scores of the season.

White scored 16 of his 19 points and all three of his three 3-pointers in the first half of the Bulls’ 129–124 loss at San Antonio. White, who had 10 second-quarter points, finished with four rebounds, four assists and a steal and was +18.

For the fourth time in six games and the second consecutive game, Tony Bradley didn’t play for the Bulls (coach’s decision).

Orlando exercised its fourth-year team option on Anthony, whom the Magic (1–5) made the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He sat out Orlando’s 113–93 win at Charlotte and is out indefinitely with a right internal oblique injury.

In addition, Orlando extended its fourth-year option on forward Chuma Okeke and the third-year options on guard Jalen Suggs and forward Franz Wagner.

In Phoenix’s 124–111 home win over New Orleans, Johnson went 5 of 10 from the floor, 2 of 6 from 3-point range and 4 of 4 on the free-throw line, adding two rebounds, three assists and two steals. It was his third multiple-3-pointer night in five games as he passed Goran Dragic for 11th on the all-time Suns 3-pointers list with 399.

Johnson’s 3-pointer with 6:04 left shoved Phoenix’s lead to 110–92.

Justin Jackson was one of two Celtics who didn’t play (coach’s decision) in Boston’s 132–123 overtime home loss to Cleveland. He’s played in only one of the first five games for the Celtics, who fell to 3–2 with their second loss in a row.

Walker Kessler missed Utah’s 117–101 loss at Denver with a sickness.
