Tar Heels in NBA: White hits 20, makes Bulls 3-pointers history amid report team rejecting trade offers

By R.L. Bynum

It hasn’t been the most productive of Coby White’s four NBA seasons, but he has made a little Chicago Bulls history this week. And, according to one report, the Bulls have rejected multiple offers for him ahead of next Thursday’s trade deadline.

White scored 20 points and three 3-pointers in their 114–98 home victory Thursday over the Charlotte Hornets. That effort came one game after he became the fastest player in franchise history to reach 500 3-pointers, with a pair of 3s Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers, needing only 237 games.

He played nearly 27 minutes Thursday, the most since he scored 19 points in nearly 33 minutes on Jan. 13 against Oklahoma City. White’s game score of 14.8 Thursday was second only to the 16.3 he put up against the Thunder.

White, 7 of 13 from the floor and 3 of 5 from 3-point range with four rebounds, put together five consecutive double-figure scoring games last month but had combined for only 22 points in the previous four games before his effort against Charlotte.

White has been widely praised for improving his defense this season, including in a story in The Athletic that reports multiple sources saying that the Bulls have rejected multiple trade offers. The Bulls have had a disappointing season at 24–27 but are in the play-in mix at 10th in the Eastern Conference.

Now with 504 career 3-pointers, White is averaging 8.4 points per game after averaging 13.2,15.1 and 12.7 in his first three seasons. He’s averaged a career-low 21.3 minutes, and hasn’t started a game after starting 71 games the past two seasons.

For the sixth consecutive game, Tony Bradley didn’t play (coach’s decision). His 66 seconds in the Bulls’ Jan. 19 game at Detroit represent his only playing time since Dec. 18, a stretch of 21 games. He was inactive for seven of those games, first because of personal issues, then from a non-COVID-19-related illness.

Reggie Bullock scored four points and one 3-pointer with four rebounds in Dallas’ 111–106 Thursday home win over New Orleans. Theo Pinson didn’t play (coach’s decision) for the second game in a row.

After playing 10 minutes in Memphis’ 122–112 Wednesday loss to Portland in his season debut, Danny Green sat out the Grizzlies’ 128–113 loss Thursday at Cleveland for what the team called “injury management.” Green has missed most of the season recovering from tearing the MCL and LCL in his left knee last season in the playoffs while with the Philadelphia 76ers.
