UNC senior guard Deja Kelly will try out for the United States AmeriCup team in Colorado Springs, Colo., on May 11–15.

Kelly will be one of 22 college players vying for 12 spots on the team representing the U.S. at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Leon, Mexico, July 1–9. Two other ACC players will be at the trials — Syracuse’s Dyaisha Fair and Florida State’s Ta’Niya Latson, last season’s league rookie of the year — as well as former Wake Forest guard Jewel Spear, who Thursday night announced she was transferring to Tennessee.

“Deja has solidified herself as one of the best guards in women’s college basketball, and she looks forward to representing her country,” UNC coach Courtney Banghart said. “She can play multiple guard positions and add both scoring and playmaking to the talented roster.”

Kelly led last season’s Carolina team that went 22–11 with 16.5 points per game and 101 assists and was named first-team All-ACC.

The coaches at the trials will be Washington State’s Kamie Ethridge, Cincinnati’s Katrina Merriweather and South Dakota State’s Aaron Johnston.

Players selected for the team will return to Colorado Springs for training camp in June.

Since the event began in 1993, the United States has won four gold medals. Competing against the U.S. will be Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
