Durham new voice of prime-time ACCN games; Boston ‘ACC PM’ return unlikely; UNC all-access show debuts Thursday

By R.L. Bynum

You’ll see Wes Durham on ACC Network’s biggest games but don’t expect former Carolina defensive back Tre Boston on that channel, which debuts exclusive UNC football content on Thursday.

Durham takes over this season as the play-by-play voice of “ACC Primetime Football,” the marquee ACC Network game each Saturday at 8 p.m. It will make for some quick turnarounds for the veteran announcer after the first two weeks of the college football season since he will continue to be the radio voice of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons.

Durham, of course, is the older son of the legendary Woody Durham, who was the voice of the Tar Heels for decades.

That was one of several changes ACCN announced Tuesday at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte.

The channel will bring its “ACC Huddle” and “ACC PM” shows Friday and Saturday to the site of the ACCN prime-time game each weekend. The first three are Old Dominion at Virginia Tech on Sept. 2, Southern Miss at Florida State on Sept. 9 and Florida Atlantic at Clemson on Sept. 16.

Durham replaces Dave O’Brien, the lead television voice of the Boston Red Sox, who isn’t scheduled to call ACC football games this season. “ACC PM” co-host Taylor Tannebaum replaces Kelsey Riggs as the sideline reporter, with Tim Hasselbeck returning as the analyst.

Riggs shifts to serving as host for “ACC Huddle,” replacing Jordan Cornette, one of many who ESPN laid off late last month. Eric Mac Lain, E.J. Manuel, Mark Richt and Eddie Royal will join Riggs on that program.

“ACC PM,” which airs from 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays on ACC Network, will continue to feature Tannebaum and Mark Packer as co-hosts. During the football season, it will be produced from the basement studio in Packer’s Charlotte home Monday through Thursday, then at the prime-time game site on Friday.

“We look forward to being on the road,” Packer said. “We look forward to meeting with all the coaches and players just like you [the ACC media does].”

Last season, Boston was the third “ACC PM” host, but he left the program after football season.

Boston, the host with his wife Cierra of “FAST: Home Rescue” on The Weather Channel, isn’t expected to return to “ACC PM” for football season, although an ESPN spokesman said that “the door is open” for a return.

ACC Network will air a two-part series called “All Access with Carolina Football,” with episodes at 4 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24.

According to the network, it will “offer a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the North Carolina football program leading into the 2023 season.”

Thursday’s first episode will highlight the newcomers to the Tar Heels program, showing how they spend their free time, and Coach Mack Brown making preseason evaluations.

There are segments with quarterback Drake Maye and linebacker Cedric Gray mic’d up during the spring game, showing the athletes at the ACC Unity Tour in Washington, spring video sessions with coaches and scenes from players’ summer abroad studies.
