UNC, N.C. State among the ACC schools reportedly keeping the league from adding Cal, Stanford

North Carolina and N.C. State may not agree on much, but appear to have the same opinion on expansion.

Carolina and State are reportedly two of the four schools opposing the addition of Cal and Stanford into the ACC, leaving the league one vote short of adding those two schools.

Sports Illustrated and other outlets reported Friday that only 11 of the 15 voting members favor the move, one short of the 12 needed. Also opposing the move, according to SI, are Florida State and Clemson. The Athletic also confirmed this news.

Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reported that a couple of the schools in favor of the expansion are “soft yeses.”

Earlier reports indicated that Notre Dame was a heavy supporter of adding Cal and Stanford, but SI says that Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech and Louisville have also very much in favor of the move.

Cal and Stanford, along with Washington State and Oregon State, were left without a league home after the next school year after the departures of UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten and Arizona State, Arizona, Utah and Colorado to the Big 12.

Sources tell SI that adding Cal and Stanford is unlikely to be put to a formal vote.

The Pac-12 will still have 12 schools for the upcoming school year.

  1. I agree. I haven’t even read the article but geographically that’s too much traveling. I don’t know the answers but west coast teams in the ACC is not the way to go.
