UNC freshman point guard Elliot Cadeau is the ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year in voting announced Thursday. Fifth-year center Armando Bacot is Preseason All-ACC first team for the third straight season, finishing second to Duke’s Kyle Filipowski for Preseason ACC Player of the Year.
Cadeau easily beat out Duke’s Jared McCain by a 40–6 margin in the voting.
Bacot, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year before last season, got 13 votes for Preseason Player of the Year compared to 35 for Filipowski.
No. 19-ranked Carolina is picked to finish third, with Duke the favorite in voting by a media panel and Miami picked second. Duke got 44 first-place votes, Miami five and UNC one.
The previous five times the Blue Devils have been picked to win the ACC, going back to 2001, they won the regular-season title. Carolina hasn’t finished ahead of its preseason ACC prediction since finishing fourth in the 2020–21 season after being picked to tie for fifth.
This is the 10th consecutive season that UNC has had a player on the Preseason All-ACC first team. The last time Carolina didn’t have a player on the preseason first team was before the 2013–14 season.
Joining Bacot and Filipowski on the first team are Clemson’s P.J. Hall, Virginia’s Reece Beekman and Miami’s Norchad Omier.
