Deja Kelly, Ustby Preseason All-ACC first team; UNC picked third

By R.L. Bynum

UNC senior co-captains Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby made the Preseason All-ACC Team announced Thursday, with Iowa State transfer guard Lexi Donarski making the Newcomer Watch List.

A Blue Ribbon Panel predicted the No. 16-ranked Tar Heels to finish third, with Virginia Tech, which made the Final Four last season, picked to repeat as ACC champion and Notre Dame predicted to finish second. The Hokies got 45 first-place votes, with the Irish garnering 13, UNC one and Louisville, picked to finish fourth, garnering one.

Kelly and Ustby both made the preseason and postseason All-ACC teams last season. Kelly finished fifth in the preseason voting Thursday, and Ustby finished eighth.

Kelly, a 5–8 guard who made the 20-player watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award for the nation’s top point guard for the second consecutive season, led the Tar Heels last season and was sixth in the ACC in scoring at 16.5 points per game. She was ninth in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio and 11th in assists per game.

Ustby, a 6–1 wing who made the 20-player watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award for the nation’s top small forward, led the Tar Heels in rebounding last season at 8.3 per game. She was the only ACC player to rank in the top 10 in field-goal percentage (third, 50.6%), rebounding (fourth), blocks (ninth, 1.1) and steals (10th, 1.9).

Donarski, a 6-0 graduate student with two years of eligibility, was last season’s Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 12.1 points per game.

The Hokies’ fifth-year center, Elizabeth Kitley, the reigning ACC Player of the Year, is the Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
