Tar Heels in pros: Big games for White, Johnson, Sharpe; Black scores first NBA points

By R.L. Bynum

Coby White, Cameron Johnson and Day’Ron Sharpe had solid Sunday games in victories on a day when Leaky Black scored his first NBA points and Pete Nance put up a double-double in the G League.

White collected 16 points, seven assists and two steals before fouling out in Chicago’s 119–108 victory at Detroit, the first game after a three-day break for the Bulls (4–6). White has scored in double figures in the last six games, with at least six assists in three.

In his second game back in the Brooklyn starting lineup after missing seven games with a left calf contusion, Johnson struggled from the perimeter (2 of 11 from 3-point range) but had 14 points and six rebounds in the Nets’ 102–94 home victory over Washington.

Sharpe came off the bench to contribute eight points, 12 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. His 12.4 game score and 19 minutes, 21 seconds of playing time were both season-highs. Strangely, Sharpe got more playing time with usual starting center Nic Claxton back than when Claxton missed eight games with a sprained left ankle.

Black, who made his NBA debut with four minutes on Wednesday in a home game against Washington, scored five points in 5½ minutes Sunday night in the Charlotte Hornets’ 129–107 loss at New York. He made his only 3-point attempt and had two rebounds and a block.

His first NBA points came off of an alley-oop pass from LaMelo Ball with 19.9 seconds left in the first half. His 3-pointer came with 2:56 remaining in the game.

After going scoreless in 18 minutes Friday in the Cleveland Charge’s 116–109 opening-game win against the Wisconsin Herd in his G League debut, Pete Nance put up 19 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and a steal in a 107–102 Sunday victory against the same team.

In the Texas Legends’ 114–110 home win Saturday night over the Oklahoma City Blue, Theo Pinson had 18 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals while Justin Jackson contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Tony Bradley was inactive for the game.

Cole Anthony has been Orlando’s backup point guard all season. But rookie Anthony Black started at point guard with starter Markelle Fultz out with a knee injury Saturday. Anthony had four points and two rebounds in a season-low 14 minutes. Bucks guard Damian Lillard was also out with a sore right calf, and that helped the Magic earn a 112–97 victory.

Playing time continues to be scarce for Reggie Bullock and Nassir Little with their new teams.

For the second consecutive game and the fourth in the last six, Bullock didn’t play (coach’s decision) in Houston’s 107–104 home win Saturday over Milwaukee.

Little didn’t play (coach’s decision) for the fourth game in a row, a 111–99 Phoenix home loss to Oklahoma City.
