UNC moves to season-high in NET rankings, projected No. 2 seed

By R.L. Bynum

It’s always a challenge to predict what a Carolina win will do to the Tar Heels’ NET ranking, and the 103–67 Saturday home victory over Syracuse was no exception.

The win knocked the Orange down five spots to 80 in the NET rankings, moving the victory from barely a Quad 2 to a Quad 3.

That wouldn’t figure to help league-leading UNC (13–3, 5–0 ACC). But the Heels moved up two spots to a season-high 7 in the NET after Saturday’s games, projecting them to be a low No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.

According to Bracket Matrix, the average position on dozens of bracket projections has Carolina as the sixth overall seed and the second-highest No. 2 seed. Before Saturday’s win, the projections of ESPN and CBS had UNC as a No. 2 seed in the East Regional, which concludes with the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in Boston, with the Tar Heels playing first- and second-round games in Charlotte.

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC was 9–3): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC was 74): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC was 6–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC was 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

The designation for one of Carolina’s five Quad 1 wins has become precarious, though.

N.C. State (12–4, 4–1) beat Louisville (6–10, 1–4) 89–83 Saturday, but since the Cardinals’ NET ranking is 235, the Pack fell two spots to 74. That’s just under the threshold of 75 that makes UNC’s 67–54 Wednesday win in Raleigh count as a Quad 1.

That should indicate that UNC probably needs to blowout the Cardinals at the Smith Center at 9 p.m. on Wednesday (ACC Network) to avoid dropping in the NET in the Tar Heels’ first Quad 4 game since beating Charleston Southern 105–60 on Dec. 29.

Saturday’s 2:15 game (The CW) at Boston College (10–6, 1–4) is solidly a Quad 2 game, with the Eagles’ NET ranking at 84.

Carolina’s schedule for the rest of January is favorable for stacking wins but probably not for improving its NET ranking.

The Tar Heels don’t have another Quad 1 game until they play three in a row to start February, with home games against Duke (13–3, 4–1; NET ranking of 15) and Clemson (12–4, 2–3; 28) and a road game against Miami (12–4, 3–2; 56).

That home game against the Tigers would fall to a Quad 2 designation, though, if they fall three more spots in the NET ranking.

After Radford’s 92–88 three-overtime road loss Saturday to Winthrop, the NET ranking for the Highlanders (9–7) rose to 163. That’s three away from moving UNC’s 86-70 home win on Nov. 6 from Quad 4 to Quad 3.
