AP names RJ Davis National Player of Week; he makes final 10 for West Award

The awards for RJ Davis are coming as consistently as the big games he’s producing for No. 3 North Carolina.

One day after earning ACC Player of the Week honors for the third time this season, The Associated Press named the senior guard the National Player of the Week to go with Andy Katz giving him that honor on Monday.

Also on Tuesday, Davis made the final 10 in the running for the Jerry West Award that honors the top shooting guard in the country. Also making the cut is Davis’ former Tar Heels teammate Caleb Love, now at Arizona.

Davis scored a career-high 36 points on Jan. 22 in a home win over Wake Forest and poured in 24 in Saturday’s victory at Florida State.

Davis shot 56.1% from the floor, 37.5% from behind the arc and 80% at the free-throw line last week.

Davis’ 36 points in the 85–64 win over the Demon Deacons were the most by an ACC player since Syracuse’s Cole Swider had 36 against UNC on Feb. 28, 2022, and the most by a Tar Heel since Brice Johnson had 39 at Florida State on Jan. 4, 2016.

Davis became the first Tar Heel to score 30 or more points and have zero turnovers since Justin Jackson against Kentucky on Dec. 17, 2016.

At Florida State, Davis scored 14 second-half points as UNC rallied from a 41–36 deficit to beat the Seminoles 75–68. Davis hit a twisting shot in the lane with 44 seconds to play to give UNC a four-point lead and iced the win with three free throws in the final 29 seconds.
