UNC projects as solid No. 2 seed after earning 6th Quad 1 win

By R.L. Bynum

No. 3 North Carolina continued to build a strong NCAA tournament resume five weeks away from Selection Sunday.

The league-leading Tar Heels (19–5, 11–2 ACC) are projected as a solid No. 2 seed, remaining at 10 in the NET rankings after Saturday’s 75–72 win at Miami earned their sixth Quad 1 victory. The Georgia Tech loss continues to be a black mark on UNC’s resume, though, as the Yellow Jackets (10–14, 3–10) continue to struggle.

UNC, which has a one-game lead over Virginia (19–5, 10–3) in the ACC, doesn’t get another Quad 1 chance until they visit the Cavaliers at 4 p.m. on Feb. 24.

Up next for Carolina are a pair of Quad 2 games, visiting Syracuse (15–9, 6–7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday (ESPN) and playing host to Virginia Tech (13–10, 5–7) at 2 p.m. Saturday (ESPN).

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC was 9–3): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC was 74): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC was 6–0): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC was 5–0): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

Most bracket projections on Bracket Matrix have UNC as the top No. 2 seed, with Caleb Love’s Pac-12-leading Arizona team (19–5, 10–3 Pac-12) projected by most to get the fourth No. 1 seed. All predict that UNC will play in Charlotte for the first two rounds.

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi projects UNC as the No. 2 seed in the East Region in Boston, with No. 1 UConn (22–2, 12–1 Big East) as the top seed. Jerry Palm of CBS has UNC as the No. 2 seed in the South Region in Dallas, where he projects Big 12 leader Houston (21–3, 8–3 Big 12) as the No. 1 seed.

The 74–73 loss on Jan. 30 at Georgia Tech is now a Quad 3 loss after the Yellow Jackets — in a three-way tie for last place in the ACC — fell to a NET ranking of 140, five below the threshold for that to be a Quad 2 game. Georgia Tech has lost three straight since beating UNC, the latest a 79–67 Saturday setback at Louisville.

Clemson (16–7, 6–6) is up to 29 in the NET after Saturday’s 77–68 win at Syracuse. That means that UNC’s games against the Tigers — the 65–55 win at Clemson on Jan. 6 and the 80–76 loss Tuesday in Chapel Hill — are both Quad 1. Clemson had to have a NET of at least 30 for UNC’s home defeat to get that designation.

N.C. State (15–9, 7–6) is down to 80 in the NET, making UNC’s 67–54 win in Raleigh on Jan. 10 a Quad 2 game. The rematch in Chapel Hill on March 2 remains with a Quad 3 designation.

Villanova (12–11, 5–7 Big East) fell to 49, just above the threshold of 50 for the 83–81 overtime loss on Nov. 25 to still be a Quad 1 game.
