Busy sports weekend creates challenges for Tar Heel Sports Network

The overlap of football and men’s basketball sometimes creates challenges for the Tar Heel Sports Network, and this weekend’s schedule delivers some.

The men’s basketball team plays Hawaiʻi the night before the football team plays at Boston College. The basketball game is Friday night in Honolulu, with the tipoff set for 12:30 a.m. ET Saturday, and the road football contest with the Eagles will be at 12:10 p.m. Saturday.

Jones Angell, the Voice of the Tar Heels, will be in Chestnut Hill, Mass., to call the football game on Saturday with color analyst Brynn Renner, then will fly to Maui to call their three games at the Maui Invitational, beginning with Monday’s 11:30 p.m. ET first-round game against Dayton.

Adam Lucas, columnist for goheels.com, author and co-host with Angell on the “Carolina Insider” podcast, will be the color analyst for all four games in Hawaiʻi and be on-site.

However, there will be no play-by-play announcer on-site for Friday’s Hawaiʻi game. Dave Nathan, who calls UNC baseball games and hosts pregame, halftime and postgame coverage for football and men’s basketball, will call the Hawaiʻi game remotely.

Angell usually conducts the pregame and postgame interviews with Coach Hubert Davis, but Lucas will do those for the Hawaiʻi game.

Angell announced the plan during Tuesday’s episode of the “Carolina Insider.”

The network got a bit of a break earlier this month when the men’s basketball team’s game at No. 1 Kansas fell on the Friday night of the weekend of one of the football team’s open dates.
