Hampton only plays six snaps in Chargers debut, but shows potential

By R.L. Bynum

Omarion Hampton got a taste of the NFL on Thursday night at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, and the NFL got a glimpse of his potential.

Hampton started for the Los Angeles Chargers in their 34–7 exhibition victory over the Detroit Lions, but played only six snaps, all in the first series of the game. He had two carries for nine yards.

Hampton was part of a touchdown drive after the Lions fumbled the opening kickoff to give the Chargers the ball at the Detroit 28.

Hampton’s first professional carry went for two yards, but a Lions penalty nullified that gain. On the next play, Hampton ran through the right side of the line for eight yards.

Two plays later at the Detroit 6, Hampton ran around the left side but was held to a 1-yard gain after Detroit cornerback Rock Ya-Sin took him down. Quarterback Trey Lance then passed to tight end Will Dissly for a five-yard touchdown play.

Hampton’s Chargers next play on Saturday, Aug. 10, in a 4 p.m. home game against the New Orleans Saints in a game that will air on NFL Network.
