Davis says Trimble ‘getting closer and closer’ to playing

By R.L. Bynum

UNC coach Hubert Davis is eager to have Seth Trimble back on the court soon, and says that the senior guard is making steady progress toward a return.

“He’s doing really well,” Davis said during the premiere of the “Hubert Davis Live” radio show Monday night from Top of the Hill Restaurant. “He’s working out, he’s running and he’s doing individual workouts every day, and he’s getting closer and closer to getting back out there on the floor.”

Trimble broke a bone in his left forearm in a weight-room accident on Nov. 9 after averaging 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists playing in the first two games of the season.

The No. 14 Tar Heels (8–1) have felt Trimble’s absence, particularly on defense. Davis said the team has “desperately” missed him, praising his impact when healthy.

Davis called Trimble “one of the best players in the country defensively, [with] his ability to guard the ball,” saying that Trimble and Georgetown guard K.J. Lewis are the best on-ball defenders in the country.

Trimble’s offensive skills and leadership have also been missed, Davis said.

“His ability to be able to attack the basket in transition, be able to score, and his leadership has been off the chart,” Davis said. “I’m really looking forward to him getting back out on the floor really soon.”

Last season over 34 games last season, 18 as a starter, Trimble averaged 11.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

Davis noted that he also had to adjust when Luka Bogavac was waiting to be cleared to play.

“At the beginning of the year we didn’t have Luka, then we had the full team for two games, and then now Seth has been gone,” Davis said. “And then when Seth comes back, it’s like another team. We’re just trying to find out the rotations, but I can’t wait for Seth to get back out there on the floor.”
