Cade Tyson turned Williams Arena into his personal showcase Sunday, exploding for a career-high 38 points and tying a Minnesota school record with eight 3-pointers in an 89–53 rout of Texas Southern.
Tyson was hot from the start, scoring 12 of the Gophers’ first 20 points and finishing the first half with 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including making five of seven 3-point attempts.
“I just felt locked in,” Tyson said. “Once I saw a couple go down, I knew it was going to be a special night.”
He became the first Minnesota player to score 20 or more in a half since another former UNC player, Dawson Garcia, did it with a 27-point second half at UCLA last season.
Tyson finished 11 of 19 from the floor, 8 of 12 from 3-point range and 8 of 11 at the free-throw line.

Tyson tied the school record on his eighth 3-pointer with 2:41 left as Minnesota moved to 6–5.
“It’s humbling,” he said. “But honestly, I’m just happy we got the win.”
Tyson pulled down 11 rebounds to produce his second career double-double, after collecting 19 points and 10 rebounds for Belmont at Murray State on Feb. 28, 2024.
Tyson’s best game for UNC last season was in a 93–67 home win over La Salle when he had 23 points, five 3-pointers and five rebounds.
His eight 3s tied the school record and made him the sixth Gopher to hit that mark — and the first since Payton Willis against Rutgers in 2022. Tyson’s 38 points rank eighth on Minnesota’s single-game list and are the most by a Gopher since Garcia’s 36-point game at Ohio State last December.
In other games Sunday:
— Tray Crisp collected 12 points, four assists and three rebounds as Mississippi State (10–1) rolled to an 87–64 home win over Southern Miss.
—Teonni Key had five points and six rebounds as No. 15 Kentucky (11–1) earned a 77–59 home victory over Belmont.
