White scores 25 amid trade rumors; Johnson playing well; Powell goes down with another ankle injury

By R.L. Bynum

Coby White continues to be on a roll, and Cameron Johnson is putting up consistent performances, while rookie Drake Powell’s ankle issues resurfaced.

In the G League, where you’ll be able to watch UNC alums this weekend on television during the Winter Showcase in Orlando, Leaky Black, Harrison Ingram and Cormac Ryan had solid weeks.

Powell had come off a strong game in Brooklyn’s 127–82 Sunday victory over Milwaukee with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists when he sprained his right ankle for the third time this season during Thursday’s 106–95 loss to Miami.

Powell rolled that ankle on opening night against Charlotte. He returned after missing four games only to re-sprain the same ankle when he returned Nov. 2, forcing him to miss two more games. He had only missed one game since then before the latest right ankle sprain, which happened early in Thursday’s game after playing less than four minutes coming off the bench.

There is no official word on how much time Powell could miss this time.

White continued his strong start to the season. He scored 20 points in Sunday’s 114–104 loss to New Orleans despite struggling from 3-point range (1 of 10). He bounced back Wednesday with 25 points on efficient shooting (8 of 13 FG, 3 of 5 on 3s) in a 127–111 win over Cleveland. He added five rebounds and three assists against the Cavaliers.

White is averaging 22 points through his first 10 games after missing the Bulls’ first 11 games while recovering from a calf injury.

These big games come amid rumors that other teams are targeting White in trade discussions.

Johnson scored 13 points in 43 minutes in Denver’s 128–125 win over Houston, then collected his first double-double of the season in Thursday’s 126–115 win over Orlando. In that game, he had 19 points and 11 rebounds and a team-high +27.

Johnson has been consistent from 3-point range, shooting nearly 40%.

Elsewhere for Tar Heels in the NBA:
— Harrison Barnes had mixed results this week. He scored 11 points in Tuesday’s NBA Cup championship 124–113 loss to the New York in Las Vegas on Tuesday, but missed all 16 3-point attempts in three games. He had six points, four rebounds and five assists in Saturday’s 111–109 Cup semifinals win over the Thunder. In Thursday’s 119–94 victory over Washington, he had two points and two assists.
— Cole Anthony’s role in his first season with Milwaukee continues to be limited. He played 20 minutes in Sunday’s 127–82 loss to Brooklyn with two points on 0-for-4 shooting and didn’t play Thursday (coach’s decision). He’s averaging 16 minutes, 6.9 points and 4.0 assists. Pete Nance was scoreless in nearly 9½ minutes of that Sunday game.
— Day’Ron Sharpe was productive off the bench for Brooklyn in its Sunday win over Milwaukee with 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, and had four points and six rebounds in Thursday’s loss to Miami.
— Caleb Love showed flashes in limited minutes for Portland. He scored eight points Sunday (including two 3s) in 12 minutes of the Blazers’ 136–131 win over Golden State and had five points in 8½ minutes during a 134–133 overtime Thursday win over Sacramento.  His shooting remains inconsistent, making 26.3% of his 3-point attempts on the season.
— Tony Bradley, who didn’t play in Indiana’s game on Sunday (coach’s decision), left Thursday’s 114–113 loss to New York with right thumb pain after playing only 3½ minutes.

In the G League last week, Ingram collected 24 points, 10 rebounds and three assists Saturday in his Austin Spurs’ 126–122 road loss to the Texas Legends. Through eight games, he’s shooting 51.1% from the floor and 38.7 from 3-point range.

Black scored in double figures in two Capital City Go-Go game, netting 15 in Sunday’s 127–107 home win over the Delaware Blue Coats and 11 points to go with eight rebounds in Tuesday’s 120–110 loss to Delaware.

Ryan, who had only played in three games before last week, scored 16, 13 and 14 points in three Wisconsin Herd games with a combined seven 3-pointers.

Elsewhere in the G League:
—RJ Davis was only active for one of two South Bay Lakers games, scoring four points in 20 minutes of its 127–118 Tuesday win over the San Diego Clippers.
—Garrison Brooks contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds Sunday, then 2 points Tuesday in two Birmingham games.

Ingram’s Austin Spurs are the only team with a UNC alum that’s playing in the Winter Showcase Cup tournament, facing the Stockton Kings at noon Friday on ESPNU. Austin will play again Sunday, with the opponent depending on the outcome of Friday’s game.

The other teams not in the Cup tournament are still playing games that you can watch on TV:
